URGENT - WINTER WEATHER MESSAGE

...CHRISTMAS DAY STORM MAY BRING SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL TO THE
MOUNTAINS...WITH SOME SNOW ACCUMULATION POSSIBLE IN THE VALLEYS...

.SNOW SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE IN THE NORTHWEST SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS
THROUGH 9 AM THIS MORNING...FOLLOWED BY A LULL IN WINTER WEATHER
TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

THEN ON CHRISTMAS MORNING A PACIFIC STORM WILL SPREAD SNOW INTO
EASTERN UTAH AND WESTERN COLORADO. SNOWFALL IN THE MOUNTAINS WILL
INCREASE THROUGHOUT THURSDAY...WHILE THE VALLEYS SHOULD SEE
SNOWFALL EARLY IN THE MORNING...POSSIBLY MIXING WITH RAIN DURING
THE DAY. AFTER A COLD FRONT PASSES LATE THURSDAY...SNOWFALL
SHOULD CONTINUE AT ALL ELEVATIONS THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY. SNOW
IS EXPECTED TO END FRIDAY NIGHT.

A WINTER STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS
AND PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN COLORADO AND
EASTERN UTAH FOR CHRISTMAS DAY THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING.

THIS STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GREATLY IMPACT HOLIDAY TRAVEL
OVER ALL THE HIGH MOUNTAIN PASSES AND ALONG INTERSTATE 70.
VAIL...MONARCH...RABBIT EARS AND DOUGLAS PASSES MAY BECOME SNOWPACKED
AND ICY WITH REDUCED VISIBILITY ON CHRISTMAS DAY...FRIDAY AND
FRIDAY NIGHT.

* TIMING...SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MID MORNING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...AN ADDITIONAL 1 TO 3 INCHES.

* WINDS...NORTHWEST 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH.

* IMPACTS...BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW WILL CREATE WHITEOUT
  CONDITIONS AT TIMES. THE COMBINATION OF SNOW...BLOWING SNOW
  AND FOG WILL LIMIT VISIBILITY BELOW 1/4 MILE AT TIMES.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE
EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS AND BLOWING SNOW ARE ALSO
POSSIBLE. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GRAND JUNCTION HAS ISSUED A
WINTER STORM WATCH...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY MORNING
THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING.

* TIMING...SNOWFALL SHOULD BEGIN EARLY CHRISTMAS MORNING AND
  CONTINUE THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION...IN EXCESS OF ONE FOOT POSSIBLE IN THE
  MOUNTAINS AND HIGH MOUNTAIN PASSES.

* SNOW LEVEL...ABOUT 5500 FEET EARLY THURSDAY...LOWERING TO THE
  VALLEY BOTTOMS BY SUNSET THURSDAY.

* WINDS...SOUTHWEST AT 10 TO 20 MPH SHIFTING TO THE NORTHWEST
  THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND DECREASING.

* VISIBILITY...LOWERING TO LESS THAN ONE MILE AT TIMES IN THE
  MOUNTAINS.

* IMPACTS...HOLIDAY TRAVEL COULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED...
  ESPECIALLY ALONG INTERSTATE 70 FROM THE COLORADO AND UTAH BORDER
  TO VAIL PASS. RABBIT EARS...DOUGLAS AND MONARCH PASSES MAY ALSO
  BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED. ROADS MAY BECOME SNOWPACKED AND
  ICY...WITH VISIBILITY REDUCED IN SNOWFALL AND BLOWING SNOW.
