NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BOISE ID

SUMMER OR SPRING?

JUNE 2014 WAS A MONTH OF CONTRASTS. SUMMER SPARRED WITH SPRING WITH
WEATHER TYPICAL OF LATE APRIL AS WELL AS LATE JULY.

WEATHER ON THE WHOLE WAS DRY WITH MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION ON ONLY
FIVE DAYS. THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF .27 INCH AT THE AIRPORT WAS CLOSE TO
THE JULY NORMAL BUT ONLY ABOUT HALF OF THE JUNE NORMAL.

FROM THE 1ST THROUGH THE 11TH RELATIVELY WEAK DISTURBANCES CROSSING
WESTERN CANADA HAD LITTLE EFFECT ON BOISE. WARM DRY WEATHER
PREVAILED WITH TEMPERATURES A FEW DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.

ON THE 12TH THE FIRST OF THREE UNSEASONABLY COOL UPPER LEVEL TROUGHS
FROM THE NORTH PACIFIC REACHED THE NORTHWEST COAST. SOUTHWEST FLOW
ALOFT AHEAD OF THIS FEATURE PUSHED A WARM FRONT ACROSS THE TREASURE
VALLEY...FOLLOWED BY THERMAL LOW PRESSURE WHICH HELPED RAISE THE
TEMPERATURE TO 94 AT THE AIRPORT...NORMAL FOR LATE JULY AND THE HIGH
FOR JUNE 2014.

TROUGH NUMBER ONE CROSSED THE CASCADES AND WAS CENTERED OVER THE
COLUMBIA BASIN ON THE 13TH...RESULTING IN A HIGH AT BOISE OF ONLY 70
...MORE TYPICAL OF EARLY MAY THAN MID JUNE.

ON THE 16TH A SECOND UPPER LEVEL TROUGH DROPPED IN FROM THE GULF OF
ALASKA...REINFORCING THE COLD AIR ALREADY OVER THE NORTHERN
INTERMOUNTAIN REGION AND LOWERING TEMPERATURES AN ADDITIONAL 5 TO 10
DEGREES. THE LOW FOR THE MONTH ON 41...NORMAL FOR LATE APRIL...WAS
OBSERVED ON THE 17TH.

SHOWERS ACCOMPANIED THIS SYSTEM...BRINGING BOISE THE FIRST
MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION OF THE MONTH.

BY THE 19TH TROUGH NUMBER TWO WAS ON ITS WAY EAST ALONG THE MONTANA/
CANADA BORDER...ALLOWING TEMPERATURES AT BOISE TO REBOUND TO MORE
USUAL SUMMERTIME READINGS WITH HIGHS IN THE 80S FROM THE 20TH
THROUGH THE 25TH.

THE PROGRESSION OF FEATURES CONTINUED...AND ON THE 26TH THE THIRD
AND FINAL TROUGH...FURTHER SOUTH AND NOT QUITE AS COLD AS ITS
PREDECESSORS...MOVED INLAND...BRINGING BOISE THE REMAINDER OF JUNE/S
SPARSE RAINFALL WHILE LOWERING MAX TEMPERATURES TO THE MID AND UPPER
70S FOR THE 26TH THROUGH THE 28TH.

ON THE 29TH AND 30TH AFTERNOON READINGS WARMED INTO THE LOWER 80S AS
THE FIRST MAJOR UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF SUMMER BEGAN TO BUILD OVER THE
NORTHWEST COAST.
