...MAY 2015 NARRATIVE FOR HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT...

ALTHOUGH THE MONTH AS A WHOLE AVERAGED SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL IN BOTH
THE TEMPERATURE AND PRECIPITATION DEPARTMENT...NEITHER CATEGORY
BREACHED THE TOP-20 COOLEST OR DRIEST BASED ON 119 YEARS OF
PRECIPITATION RECORDS AND 107 YEARS OF TEMPERATURE RECORDS.

LIKELY THE MOST NOTABLE "WEATHER NEWS" OF THE MONTH WAS THE
UNUSUALLY COLD TWO-DAY STRETCH THAT OCCURRED FROM THE 19TH-20TH:

- WITH DAILY HIGH TEMPERATURES OF (47,51) AND LOW TEMPERATURES OF
(40,40)...THE OVERALL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR MAY 19-20 AT HASTINGS
MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS A CHILLY 44.5 DEGREES. THIS ACTUALLY RANKED AS
THE 3RD-COLDEST STRETCH ON RECORD OF TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS THIS LATE
INTO THE SPRING. HERE ARE THE TOP-5 COLDEST (BASED ON AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE):

1) 41.3 DEGREES...MAY 19-20, 1915 (PART OF A 3-DAY COLD STRETCH)
2) 43.5 DEGREES...MAY 28-29, 1915
3) 44.5 DEGREES...MAY 19-20, 2015 (JUST OCCURRED)
4) 45.5 DEGREES...MAY 26-27, 1992
5) 46.0 DEGREES...MAY 20-21, 1931
(NOTE: UNFORTUNATELY HASTINGS HAD MISSING DATA FOR MAY 28, 1947
AND THUS THE LATE-MAY 1947 COLD SNAP COULD NOT BE INCLUDED IN THE
RANKINGS)

- ON THE MORNING OF THURSDAY MAY 21...THE LOW TEMPERATURE AT
HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT BOTTOMED OUT AT 37 DEGREES. ALTHOUGH THIS
STAYED THREE DEGREES ABOVE THE RECORD LOW FOR THE DATE (34 SET IN
1931)...THIS STILL MARKED THE COLDEST LOW TEMPERATURE THIS LATE INTO
THE SPRING IN 47 YEARS...SINCE A LOW OF 35 ON MAY 21, 1968.

THE HIGHEST WIND GUSTS OF THE MONTH AT HASTINGS MUNICIPAL AIRPORT
WAS ONLY 41 MPH FROM THE WEST...WHICH OCCURRED DURING THE EARLY
EVENING OF THE 17TH.

...METEOROLOGICAL-SPRING 2015 SEASONAL RECAP COVERING MARCH-MAY...

- AVERAGE MEAN TEMPERATURE: 52.4 DEGREES (1.8 ABOVE NORMAL)
- SPRING PRECIPITATION: 7.61 INCHES (1.31 BELOW NORMAL)
- SPRING SNOWFALL: 0.8 INCHES (5.6 BELOW NORMAL)

FOR THE METEOROLOGICAL SPRING SEASON OF MARCH...APRIL AND MAY AS A
WHOLE...IT WAS SLIGHTLY WARMER THAN NORMAL AND SLIGHTLY DRIER THAN
NORMAL. PRECIPITATION-WISE...HASTINGS RECEIVED 86 PERCENT OF NORMAL
SPRING PRECIPITATION...WITH THE MAIN CULPRIT TOWARD THE DRIER SPRING
BEING A VERY DRY MARCH THAT ONLY TALLIED 0.20 INCHES.

SNOWFALL-WISE...THE ONLY MEASURABLE AMOUNTS OF THE SPRING SEASON
CONSISTED OF A MINOR EVENT ON MARCH 3RD-4TH THAT TOTALED MERELY 0.8
INCHES. AS A RESULT...THE TOTAL SEASONAL SNOWFALL FOR THE 2014-2015
SEASON ENDED UP AS 17.0 INCHES...A NOTABLE 11.8 INCHES BELOW THE 30-
YEAR NORMAL. THIS RESULTED IN THE LEAST-SNOWY WINTER IN EIGHT
YEARS...SINCE THE 2006-07 SEASON ONLY TOTALED 15.6 INCHES.
