...DECEMBER WAS WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL IN NORFOLK...

WITH A VERY WARM STRETCH IN MID-DECEMBER...AND TEMPERATURES MAINLY
ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH MUCH OF THE MONTH...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN
DECEMBER WAS 28.2 DEGREES...WHICH IS 3.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.
WHILE THE MONTH OF DECEMBER WAS SLIGHTLY WETTER THAN NORMAL...THE
MONTHLY SNOWFALL OF 5.9 INCHES WAS NEAR NORMAL.

AFTER A SLIGHTLY COOL START TO THE MONTH...TEMPERATURES ROSE ABOVE
AVERAGE IN NORFOLK ON THE 2ND AND REMAINED THERE ON ALL BUT 2 DAYS
THROUGH THE 15TH. ON THE 13TH AND 14TH IN PARTICULAR...NUMEROUS
RECORD WARM TEMPERATURES WERE SET...INCLUDING DAILY RECORD WARMEST
MINIMUM TEMPERATURES ON BOTH DAYS...AS WELL AS THE WARMEST MINIMUM
TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN DECEMBER. THE MID-MONTH WAS MARKED BY
LONG PERIODS OF CLOUDINESS...BUT MEASURABLE RAIN HELD OF UNTIL THE
14TH. THE RAIN TOTAL ON THE 14TH THROUGH THE 15TH WAS 0.62
INCHES...OR NEARLY HALF OF THE PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH. THE
SYSTEM BROUGHT GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS TO NORFOLK...WITH 50 MPH GUSTS
RECORDED ON THE 14TH...AND WITH LIGHT FREEZING RAIN BUT JUST A TRACE
OF SNOW REPORTED BEHIND THE COLD FRONT. BEHIND THE STORM
SYSTEM...TEMPERATURES FELL BACK TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL READINGS
JUST BRIEFLY...WITH A GRADUAL WARMING BRINGING TEMPERATURES BACK
ABOVE NORMAL ON THE 18TH AS THE CLOUDY REGIME PERSISTED. THE FIRST
MEASURABLE SNOW OF THE MONTH FELL ON THE 18TH...WITH 0.4 INCHES
FALLING. MORE APPRECIABLE SNOW FELL ON THE 23RD AND 26TH WHERE 2.1
AND 1.9 INCHES FELL RESPECTIVELY. THIS SNOW HELPED SET THE STAGE FOR
A VERY COLD END TO THE MONTH. FROM THE 27TH THROUGH THE 31ST
TEMPERATURES WERE WELL BELOW NORMAL AND ON THE 30TH THE DAYTIME HIGH
WAS ONLY 2 DEGREES.
