FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
904 AM PDT MON MAY 2 2016

...THUNDERSTORMS WITH POSSIBLE LAL 3 LIGHTNING COUNTS AND OUTFLOW
GUSTS TO 40 MPH TODAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...FINAL DAY OF HOT DRY WEATHER. MID LEVEL
INSTABILITY WILL BRING SHOWERS AND A THREAT OF ACTIVE
THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THE EVENING. INCREASING ONSHORE FLOW WILL
BEGIN AN INLAND COOL DOWN TOMORROW AND CONFINE THE THUNDERSTORM
THREAT TO THE CASCADES. MUCH COOLER WEDNESDAY AS MARINE LAYER
DEEPENS.

.DISCUSSION...UPPER RIDGE WILL SLOWLY MOVE EAST OVER THE NEXT
COUPLE DAYS. THERMAL LOW PRESSURE WILL MOVE AWAY FROM THE AREA
TODAY BUT HAS ALREADY BROUGHT MODEST INSTABILITY AS SHOWN BY THE
ALTOCUMULUS FLOCCUS IN PLACE THIS MORNING. FEEL THE MORNING
INVERSIONS WILL BREAK AROUND 1100 HRS THEN ALLOW THE SURFACE
INSTABILITY TO TIE IN TO CREATE SHOWERS. INSTABILITY INCREASES
THIS AFTERNOON AND COULD BRING SOME LAL 3 THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY
MAINLY EAST OF THE COAST RANGE. SOMEWHAT DRY LOW LEVELS WILL
CONTRIBUTE TO GUSTY STORM OUTFLOW GUSTS 30 TO 40 MPH. GENERALLY
EXPECT STORM MOVEMENT TO BE NORTH-NORTHWEST WITH THE STRONGEST
WINDS ON THE NORTHERN FLANK OF THE STORMS.

ONSHORE FLOW BEGINS LATE THIS AFTERNOON BUT WILL STRENGTHEN
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. A SPLITTING COLD FRONT WILL ALSO DISSIPATE
OVER THE AREA TOMORROW BUT COULD REMAIN INTACT ENOUGH TO BRING
SPOTTY WETTING RAINS. EXPECT THE THUNDERSTORM THREAT WILL BE
LIMITED TO THE CASCADES TUESDAY AND PERHAPS TO THE IMMEDIATE CREST
WEDNESDAY...IF AT ALL.

UPPER LOW PRESSURE WILL DIVE SOUTH WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY WITH
HIGH PRESSURE NOSING OVER THE TOP FROM THE PACIFIC TO BRING MILD
AND DRY WEATHER FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKEND. SO FAR...IT DOES NOT
APPEAR LIKE WE WILL SEE A SIGNIFICANT THERMAL TROUGH DEVELOP NOR
AND OFFSHORE WIND EVENT TO REALLY SPIKE TEMPERATURES. /JBONK
