...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1929, perhaps the most destructive prairie fire in Rawlins County,
Kansas, history occurred. Starting in the southwest part of the county,
it rapidly spread northeast pushed by southwest winds of 40 to 50 mph.
The fire killed two people and injured others. As the fire swept northeast
along the Beaver Creek valley, it neared Atwood. Hundreds of people
eventually fought the fire which was extinguished near Highway 25 after
burning over 800 square miles of land.

In 2003, light snow began during the evening hours of Saturday
April 5th and intensified to heavy snow during the overnight hours
across eastern Colorado, northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska.
Snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches were common across
Cheyenne, Rawlins, Sherman, Thomas and Wallace counties in
northwest Kansas. Snow and blowing snow resulted in reduced
visibilities and hazardous travel conditions.
