...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

IN 1995, LIGHTNING SPARKED MULTIPLE GRASSFIRES IN EASTERN COLORADO.
IN YUMA COUNTY, AT LEAST 6000 ACRES, INCLUDING TEN SECTIONS OF PASTURE,
BURNED IN A GRASSFIRE ESTIMATED TO BE 4 MILES WIDE AND 2.5 MILES LONG.
IN KIT CARSON COUNTY, LIGHTNING SPARKED A GRASSFIRE WHICH BURNED 1600
ACRES AT THE BUSBY RANCH.  A SHERIFF`S DEPUTY RECEIVED MINOR INJURIES
WHILE RESPONDING TO THE FIRE WHEN HE WAS BLINDED BY A BOLT OF LIGHTNING
AND LOST CONTROL OF HIS CRUISER.

IN 2011, AN ISOLATED SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM MOVED FROM NEBRASKA AND TRAVELED  SOUTHEAST THROUGH BIRD CITY, MCDONALD, COLBY AND OAKLEY BEFORE WEAKENING. WIND GUSTS TO 80 MPH BROKE EIGHT INCH DIAMETER TREE LIMBS IN BIRD CITY, DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES IN COLBY, AND BLEW A SEMI-TRUCK OVER NEAR MONUMENT.
