In 1910, five townships in Rawlins County, Kansas, were involved fighting
major grass fires that were spread by 40 mph winds. Two men, who were
plowing some fire breaks ahead of the flames, were badly burned.

In 1911, the day dawned clear and cool 12 miles north of Studley in
Sheridan County. Soon a high wind came up from the northwest creating
dust so thick it darkened rooms until it was necessary to light lamps
to see during the noon time hours.

In 1916, a large prairie fire developed along the Logan and Wichita
county line. Fueled by dry grasses and strong northwest winds, the fire
quickly spread into northern Wichita County. A number of farmsteads
were badly burned, and one report stated a number of horses got their
tails caught on fire.

In 1965, McCook Nebraska plummeted to 11 degrees below zero, the
latest sub zero temperature on record at that location.
