...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

IN 1923, A TORNADO STRUCK LEOTI KANSAS LEVELING MOST OF THE MAIN
STREET. WORKERS WERE BURIED IN THE RUBBLE WHERE THEY WORKED. THE
PIANO WAS SUCKED OUT OF THE METHODIST CHURCH AND SLAMMED DOWN IN
THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET.

IN 1933, A RAIN STORM OF SEVERAL HOURS ALONG THE KANSAS COLORADO
STATE LINE CAUSED STREAMS TO SWELL IN THE AREA. HEAVY DAMAGE WAS
REPORTED ALONG CREEKS AND THE SMOKY HILL RIVER. A MAN DROWNED WHEN
ATTEMPTING TO RESCUE A FAMILY MAROONED IN THEIR TWO STORY HOUSE IN
THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF GREELEY COUNTY. THE SMOKY HILL RIVER RAGED
DURING THE FLOOD EXPANDING TO ONE MILE IN WIDTH AND DID GREAT DAMAGE
TO THE CROSSING AT US 40 SOUTH AND HIGHWAY 27. THE ANGRY WATER
RUSHED ON INTO THE GREAT STATE LAKE NEAR SCOTT CITY TEARING OUT THE
RECENTLY BUILT STATE DAM.

IN 2002, AN INTENSE MICROBURST WIND EVENT OCCURRED SUNDAY EVENING
IN THE TOWN OF ST FRANCIS KANSAS RESULTING IN A DAMAGE SWATH
APPROXIMATELY 5 BLOCKS WIDE AND A MILE LONG. WINDS ESTIMATED AT
100 MPH SWEPT THROUGH TOWN FROM SOUTHEAST TO NORTHWEST OVER A TEN
MINUTE PERIOD. A SMALL BUSINESS LOST ITS ROOF, A SEMI TRAILER WAS
OVERTURNED AND A LOCAL CAR DEALERSHIP SUFFERED WINDOW DAMAGE TO 45
VEHICLES IN ADDITION TO THE STORE FRONT WINDOW. A LARGE CAMPER
TRAILER WAS ROLLED SEVERAL TIMES AND DESTROYED. A CARPORT WAS
DESTROYED, AND SEVERAL BARNS AND NUMEROUS HOMES SUSTAINED ROOF
DAMAGE. WITNESSES REPORTED A THUNDERSTORM IN PROGRESS, WHEN
SUDDENLY A LOUD ROAR DEVELOPED, ACCOMPANIED BY WIND DAMAGE.
