PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LA CROSSE WI
700 AM CDT THU APR 24 2014

...SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN...

THIS IS SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK IN MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN. A
TORNADO DRILL IS EXPECTED TO BE HELD TODAY...THURSDAY APRIL
24TH...BETWEEN 1 AND 2 PM. A TEST WATCH WILL BE ISSUED AROUND 1 PM
AND THE LA CROSSE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL ISSUE A MOCK TORNADO
WARNING AT 145 PM. A SECOND TORNADO DRILL WILL BE HELD IN MINNESOTA
AT 655 PM WITH THE LA CROSSE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ISSUING A MOCK
TORNADO WARNING AT THAT TIME. IF SEVERE WEATHER DEVELOPS...THE
DRILL WILL BE PUSHED BACK TO TOMORROW...BUT AT THIS POINT SEVERE
WEATHER IS NOT LOOKING LIKELY.

THE TOPIC TODAY IS SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM IS DEFINED AS ONE THAT PRODUCES A TORNADO...
HAIL 1 INCH IN DIAMETER OR LARGER...OR WIND GUSTS OF 58 MPH. BUT
THUNDERSTORMS CAN ALSO PRODUCE DEADLY LIGHTNING AND FLASH FLOODING.

HAIL CAN PRODUCE EXTENSIVE PROPERTY OR AGRICULTURAL DAMAGE IF LARGE
ENOUGH. WARNING ARE ISSUED WHEN HAIL STONES ARE EXPECTED TO REACH
THE SIZE OF A QUARTER...OR ABOUT 1 INCH. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS MOVE
INDOORS AND STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN WARNINGS ARE ISSUED FOR
LARGE HAIL.

STRONG WINDS FROM THUNDERSTORMS CAN KNOCK DOWN TREES...BARNS...
OUTBUILDS...CARPORTS...POWER LINES...SHEDS AND DAMAGE ROOFS. LIKE
LARGE HAIL...YOU SHOULD MOVE INDOORS AND STAY AWAY FROM WINDOWS.
WHEN CAMPING IN A WOODED AREA...BE ALERT FOR STRONG WINDS AND
THE POTENTIAL FOR FALLING TREES NEAR YOUR CAMPSITE.

LIGHTNING KILLS ON AVERAGE 55 TO 60 PEOPLE PER YEAR ACROSS THE
UNITED STATES. THESE INCIDENTS OCCUR WHEN PEOPLE ARE DOING
RELATIVELY SIMPLE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES SO SIMPLY MOVE INDOORS WHEN
STORMS APPROACH. USUALLY WHEN YOU HEAR THUNDER...YOU ARE POTENTIALLY
CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET STRUCK.
