...Temperatures and precipitation at La Crosse, Wisconsin were well
above normal during the month of September...

The average temperature was 67.7 degrees. This was 4.9 degrees above
normal. The average high temperature was 76.8 degrees and the
average low temperature was 58.7 degrees. The highest temperature
for the month was 87 degrees which occurred on the 6th. The coldest
temperature was 50 degrees which occurred on the 29th.

La Crosse received 10.46 inches of precipitation during the month.
This was 6.90 inches above normal. The greatest 24-hour
precipitation total was 3.61 inches which occurred from the 21st to
the 22nd.


A daily record for precipitation was set on September 21. A total of
3.17 inches of rain fell on the 21st. This shattered the old record
of 1.19 inches set back in 1986.


It was a very warm and wet month of September for La Crosse,
Wisconsin. The temperature never fell below 50 degrees for the
entire month. This is only the second time this has happened since
observations began, with the first time way back in 1884. The daily
high temperature reached at least 70 degrees every day until the
27th. This is tied with the year 1908 for the latest occurrence of
the first day with a high temperature below 70 degrees. The monthly
average temperature of 67.7 degrees is the 7th highest average
temperature for the month of September on record. The average low
temperature of 58.7 degrees is the third highest average low
temperature observed for the month of September.

Rainfall was well above normal for September, with 10.46 inches of
rain falling. This was the third wettest September on record. The
10.46 inches of rain that fell also makes September, 2016 the eighth
highest precipitation total for any month ever recorded at La
Crosse. There were two notable wet periods during the month. The
first came on the 5th through 10th when 4.62 inches of rain fell,
including 1.42 inches on the 6th and 1.76 inches on the 9th. The
second period was the record-setting rainfall of September 21st and
22nd that produced widespread flooding across the region. 4.70
inches of rain fell on those two days combined, including a single
day record of 3.17 inches on the 21st. The 3.17 inches that fell on
the 21st is also the third highest total ever for a single day in
the month of September.

...Looking ahead to October...

The average temperature for the month of October is 50.2 degrees.
The average high temperature is 59.9 degrees and the average low
temperature is 40.4 degrees. The normal high temperatures starts off
at 67 degrees on the 1st and falls to 53 degrees by the 31st. The
normal low starts at 46 degrees and drops off to 36 degrees by the
end of the month. The highest temperature ever recorded during the
month of October was 93 degrees which occurred on the 6th in 1963.
The lowest temperature ever recorded during the month of October was
6 degrees above zero which occurred on the 25th in 1887.

The average precipitation in October is 2.17 inches. The average
snowfall is two tenths of an inch. The wettest October occurred in
1900 when 12.09 inches of precipitation fell at the the La Crosse
Regional Airport. The driest October on record was back in 1952 with
only two hundredths of an inch. The highest snowfall total for the
month of October was 7.0 inches in 1917.
