...An Unusually Warm and Wet Astronomical Winter...

The 2016-17 astronomical winter (which ran from
December 21st through March 19th) was unusually warm
and wet at both La Crosse WI and Rochester MN.  Below
are more details on each of these sites...

La Crosse WI...

Temperatures - Tied for the 3rd Warmest Astronomical Winter

During astronomical winter, temperatures averaged 29.4F
at La Crosse Regional Airport.  This was 8.7F warmer than the long-
term (1872-2017) average of 20.7F.  This was tied with the winter of
1881-82 for the 3rd warmest winter.  It is interesting to note that
7 out of the 14 warmest winters have occurred within the last 20
years.  Here are the ten warmest astronomical winters in La Crosse

The average high temperature was 37.1F.  This was 7.6F warmer than
the long-term average of 29.5F.  This was the 4th warmest and the
warmest since the winter of 2011-12 (37.5F average). The warmest
average high temperature was 43.4F during the winter of 1877-78.

The average low temperature was 21.6F.  This was 9.6F
warmer than the long-term average of 12.0F.  This tied
the winter of 1991-92 for the 3rd warmest average low
temperature.  This past winter had the warmest average
low temperature since the winter of 2011-12 (21.8F).
The warmest average low temperature was 29.7F during
the winter of 1877-78.

The warmest high temperature was 66F on March 6th.
The coldest high temperature was 5F on January 5th.

The warmest low temperature was 51F on March 6th.
The coldest low temperature was -6F on January 6th.

Precipitation -

During astronomical winter, a total of 5.82" of
precipitation fell at La Crosse Regional Airport.
This was 2.12" below the long-term average of 3.70".
This was the 9th wettest winter.   Here are the

of precipitation fell.

Measurable (0.01" or greater) precipitation fell on
29 days (32.6%) and trace amounts of precipitation
fell on another 21 days (23.6%).

Snowfall -

During astronomical winter, a total of 24.8" of snow
fell at La Crosse Regional Airport.  This was
4.4" below the long-term average of 29.2".

The snowiest dayS occurred on March 1st and March 12th when 3.5" of
snow fell.

Measurable (0.1" or greater) snow fell on 14 days (15.7%)
and trace amounts of snow fell on another 20 days (22.5%).

Snow Depth -

During astronomical winter, the average snow depth at
La Crosse Regional Airport was 3.0".  This was 1.4" below
the long-term average of 4.4".

The greatest snow depth was 7" on December 24th.

Measurable snow was on the ground on 66 days or 74.2% of the season
and there was no snow on the ground on 15 days or 16.9% of the
season.


Rochester...

Temperatures - 8th Warmest

During astronomical winter, temperatures averaged 24.1F at
Rochester International Airport.  This was 6.5F above the
normal of 17.6F.  This made it the 8th warmest winter and
the warmest since the winter of 2011-12 (average temperature
of 29.5F - warmest winter ever recorded). It is interesting
to note that 7 out of the 12 warmest winters have occurred
within the last 20 years.   Here are the ten warmest
astronomical winters in Rochester MN.

warmer than the long-term average of 8.8F.  This made
it the 8th warmest and the warmest since 2011-12.

The warmest high temperature was 63F on March 6th.
The coldest high temperature was -1F on January 5th.

The warmest low temperature was 37F on March 6th.
The coldest low temperature was -13F on January 6th.

Precipitation - 2nd Wettest

During astronomical winter, a total of 6.01" of
precipitation fell at Rochester International Airport.
This was 3.01" wetter than the long-term average of 3".
Only the winter of 1887-88 was wetter (6.36").

Snowfall -  24th Snowiest

During astronomical winter, a total of 35.6" of snow fell
at Rochester International Airport.  This was 7.7" above
the long-term average of 27.9".

The snowiest dayS occurred on February 24th and March 12th when 6.4"
of snow fell.

Measurable (0.1" or greater) snow fell on 16 days (18.0%)
and trace amounts of snow fell on another 15 days (16.9%).

Snow Depth -

During astronomical winter, the average snow depth at Rochester
International Airport was 4.7".  This was 0.9" below than
the the long-term average of 5.6".

The greatest snow depth was 10" from January 26th through
February 1st and from February 25th through February 27th.

Measurable snow was on the ground on 71 days or 79.8%
of the season and there was no snow on the ground on 15 days
or 16.9% of the season.
