.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 320 PM CDT Tue Apr 16 2024

Today and tonight...

A big upper trough is centered over the central and northern plains
with wrap-around rain and storms impacting south central and central
Nebraska and north central Kansas. The storms are not expected to be
severe due to low mid-level lapse rates and CAPE. Although some
strong to high wind gusts are possible with a wind shift/cold front
that moved into the area earlier today. Temperatures today are
expected to be cooler behind the surface low and upper low across
the area with highs ranging from the lower 60s to mid 70s. The
cooler temperatures will continue into tonight with lows mostly in
the 40s with northwest winds.

Wednesday and Wednesday night...

An upper trough will be present from the Pacific Northwest to the
Northern Plains on Wednesday with mostly zonal flow over south
central and central Nebraska and north central Kansas. High
temperatures on Wednesday will be similar or slightly warmer than
today. A cold front associated with the upper trough to the north
will push into the area Wednesday evening into Wednesday night and
will bring another chance (up to near 90%) of showers and
thunderstorms. Temperatures are expected to cool into the mid 30s to
mid 40s Wednesday night.

Thursday through next Tuesday...

The surface high will move closer to the area on Thursday with high
temperatures in the 50s accompanied by northerly winds. Low
temperatures Thursday night are expected to be in the 30s.
Temperatures on Friday will be slightly cooler than those on
Thursday. Rain chances (up to near 25%) will continue on Friday for
mainly far western portions of the forecast area. Temperatures will
drop even more Friday night with lows in the mid 20s to upper 30s.
Precipitation chances (up to near 55%) will continue for Friday
night. The region will be on the backside of an upper trough on
Saturday with a surface high and northerly winds present. This will
result in high temperatures on Saturday in the mid 40s to mid 50s.
Precipitation chances (up to 45%) will continue for Saturday.
Temperatures will continue to drop Saturday night with lows in the
mid 20s to lower 30s. A warm up is expected on Sunday as southerly
winds return with highs in the mid 50s to lower 60s. Warmer
temperatures are also expected Sunday night with lows mostly in the
30s. The warmer temperatures will continue into Monday and next
Tuesday with highs in the 60s and 70s. Various rain and thunderstorm
chances (25% or less) will be present from Saturday evening through
next Tuesday.
