510 WGUS82 KGSP 182248 FLSGSP Flood Advisory National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg SC 648 PM EDT Sat May 18 2024 NCC011-027-190115- /O.NEW.KGSP.FA.Y.0076.240518T2248Z-240519T0115Z/ /00000.N.ER.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.OO/ Avery NC-Caldwell NC- 648 PM EDT Sat May 18 2024 ...FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 915 PM EDT THIS EVENING... * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...A portion of Avery and Caldwell counties in western North Carolina * WHEN...Until 915 PM EDT. * IMPACTS...Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to streams and other poor-drainage areas, including farmland, parks, greenways, boat-access areas, golf courses, underpasses, and parking lots. Isolated, shallow flows over roadways is possible. A few flood-prone, low-water crossings may become impassible. A small culvert washout or two is possible. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 648 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain due to stationary thunderstorms in the headwaters of the Linville River, N Toe River, Wilson Creek, and Johns River. Up to 2 inches of rain has fallen in very localized areas over the past 60-75 minutes, primarily near Grandfather Mountain in the Linville River watershed. A stationary thunderstorm is ongoing north of Grandfather Mountain near Sugar Mountain and are beginning to impact the headwaters of the N Toe River. Another small storm is impacting the headwaters of the Johns River north of Globe and Upton. These storms will be capable of producing another 1-2 inches of rain in the next 60 minutes. Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas near streams is expected to begin shortly. - Flooding may occur near or within the following locations... Blowing Rock, Sugar Mountain, Seven Devils, Grandfather Mountain State Park, B.R. Parkway-Linville Falls To Grandfather, Edgemont, Linville and Upton. - Http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route. Flooding is occurring or is imminent. It is important to know where you are relative to streams, rivers, or creeks which can become killers in heavy rains.
