...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1934, winds atop Mount Washington, New Hampshire
averaged 186 mph for 5 minutes with a peak gust of 231
mph, the strongest gust on record for the United States.
At the time, the 231 mph gust had also been the highest
wind speed ever recorded in the world until April 10th,
1996, when a 253 mph gust was measured at Barrow Island,
Australia as Super Typhoon Olivia annihilated the region.

In 1927, the 3rd deadliest tornado in Texas history
occurred when a violent F5, averaging nearly 1 mile wide,
went on a 35-mile rampage through Rocksprings, located in
extreme South Texas. The huge twister killed 74 and
injured 205, or about one third of the town`s population
at the time. An estimated $1.23 million damage resulted
as 235 of the 247 buildings were destroyed, many of which
were leveled. So much for spring. In 1959, a snowstorm
produced up to 10 inches in Central Kansas in a swath
from Russell to Cottonwood Falls.
