THE YEAR BEGAN WITH A PERIOD OF WARM, WET WEATHER INCLUDING MORE
THAN AN INCH OF RAINFALL ON JANUARY 3. COLDER AIR SOON FOLLOWED
ALONG WITH SOME LIGHT SNOW ON THE 7TH. THIS ENDED UP BEING THE ONLY
PERIOD OF CONSISTENT COLD WEATHER OF THE MONTH. WARMER AIR MOVED IN
AGAIN ON THE 10TH AND THE JANUARY THAW BEGAN. THE NEXT THREE DAYS
SAW THE TEMPERATURE TOP 50 DEGREES EACH DAY AND THE LAST OF THE
EARLY WINTER SNOW PACK MELTED AWAY. SOME BRIEFLY COOLER AIR ARRIVED
AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH AND A SNOWSTORM ON THE 17TH AND
18TH BROUGHT MORE THAN 5 INCHES OF SNOWFALL. SEVERAL DAYS OF MILD
TEMPERATURES FOLLOWED ALLOWING THIS SNOW TO GRADUALLY MELT DOWN TO
JUST A TRACE. ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM BROUGHT SLEET AND FREEZING
RAIN ON THE 24TH WITH MILD TEMPERATURES REMAINING THROUGH MOST OF
THE REST OF THE MONTH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH WAS 29.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS 7.5
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL AND THE 4TH WARMEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THE
WARMEST JANUARY WAS IN 2002 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 30.4
DEGREES. THE COLDEST WAS 1971 AT ONLY 12.1 DEGREES. THE FOLLOWING
TABLE LISTS THE WARMEST JANUARYS ON RECORD AT PORTLAND

A TOTAL OF 3.65 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION FELL WHICH WAS 0.27 INCHES
ABOVE NORMAL. THREE OF THE LAST FOUR MONTHS HAVE SEEN ABOVE NORMAL

THE SUMMER. THE HEAVIEST PRECIPITATION FELL ON JANUARY 24 WHEN 1.36
INCHES OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WAS OBSERVED. THE WETTEST JANUARY
ON RECORD WAS IN 1935 WHEN 12.29 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE DRIEST WAS
IN 2004 WHEN ONLY 0.28 INCHES FELL.

THERE WAS 7.1 INCHES OF SNOW THAT FELL WHICH WAS 12.1 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL AND THE LEAST SNOWY JANUARY SINCE 2007. THE HEAVIEST SNOW
FELL ON THE 17TH THRU 19TH WHEN 5.1 INCHES WAS MEASURED. THE
SNOWIEST JANUARY WAS IN 1979 WHEN 62.4 INCHES OF SNOW WAS OBSERVED.
THE LEAST SNOWY WAS IN 1908 WHEN ONLY 1.6 INCHES WAS OBSERVED.
