REMARKS...

ALTHOUGH TEMPERATURES WERE NEAR THEIR NORMAL VALUES FOR MUCH OF THE
FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH...FAIRLY PERSISTENT HEAT BROUGHT THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE UP TO THE 19TH WARMEST AUGUST ON RECORD. THE MOST
OPPRESSIVE HEAT CAME FROM AUGUST 19 THROUGH AUGUST 26 WHEN THE
AVERAGE MAXIMUM AIR TEMPERATURES WAS IN THE UPPER 90S AND HEAT INDEX
VALUES PEAKED IN THE TRIPLE DIGITS EACH DAY. ONE RECORD FOR HIGHEST
DAILY MINIMUM WAS SET AND ANOTHER WAS TIED DURING THIS STRETCH. THE
LOW TEMPERATURE OF 79 ON AUGUST 21 TIED THE RECORD FOR THAT
DAY...WHILE THE LOW OF 80 ON AUGUST 24 BROKE THAT DAYS RECORD. A
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM PRODUCED WINDS AROUND 60 MPH IN SOUTHEAST
PORTIONS OF TOPEKA ON AUGUST 6.
