Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
509 AM CDT Thu May 2 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Fire danger will remain low today, with overnight rainfall coming to
an end throughout the morning hours. Rainfall amounts ranged from a
quarter inch near Huron, around half an inch along the I-29
corridor, increasing to 1-1.5 inches across portions of northwestern
Iowa. Breezy easterly winds will weaken throughout the morning
hours, with winds strengthening again during the afternoon hours
with winds out of the west. Highest wind gusts are expected along
the central NE/SD border, where gusts into the mid 30s are possible,
whereas elsewhere wind gusts into the mid 20s are expected. Areas
along the MO River Valley in south-central South Dakota may see RH`s
dip down into the 30s, but given the status of the vegetation fire
danger will remain low.

Friday will see minimum RH`s in the 30s and 40s during the afternoon
hours, with a cold front moving through the area during the
afternoon hours from northwest to southeast. Intermittent wind gusts
into the 20s can be expected throughout the day, with afternoon
highs in the 60s and lower 70s.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR FRIDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
