CROSS-SECTION IS CONSTRICTED RESULTING IN A HIGHER RIVER STAGE FOR
ANY GIVEN AMOUNT OF DISCHARGE THAN EXISTS DURING ICE-FREE CONDITIONS.
ALTHOUGH ACCURATE... THE RIVER STAGES SHOWN CANNOT BE USED TO
DIRECTLY COMPUTE DISCHARGE BECAUSE THE AMOUNT OF BACKWATER VARIES
WITH TIME... TEMPERATURE... AND OTHER FACTORS.
AT SOME STATIONS... THE SYSTEMS USED TO SENSE WATER STAGE ARE
SUSCEPTIBLE TO ERRONEOUS READINGS DURING PERIODS OF EXTREME COLD
TEMPERATURES. STAGE HYDROGRAPHS DURING SUCH TIMES SHOW RAPID
FLUCTUATIONS IN WATER LEVELS AND SUBSEQUENT RAPID RETURN TO PREVIOUS
LEVELS WHEN SLIGHTLY WARMER TEMPERATURES RETURN.
