JANUARY ENDED UP BEING MUCH COLDER THAN NORMAL AND MUCH SNOWIER THAN
NORMAL. GRAND RAPIDS RECORDED YET ANOTHER TOP TEN MONTH FOR SNOWFALL
(FOLLOWING DECEMBER) WITH A RANKING OF 7TH SNOWIEST JANUARY SINCE
1892. LANSING AND MUSKEGON RANKED 15TH AND 13TH RESPECTIVELY FOR
JANUARY SNOWFALL (LANSING RECORDS DATE BACK TO 1863 WHILE MUSKEGON
RECORDS DATE BACK TO 1896). IN TERMS OF THE COLD TEMPERATURES...
GRAND RAPIDS CAME IN WITH THE 15TH COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD WHILE
LANSING HAD THE 20TH COLDEST JANUARY AND MUSKEGON HAD THE 18TH
COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD.

NOTABLE EVENTS DURING THE MONTH INCLUDE A SIGNIFICANT SNOW STORM ON
JANUARY 5 WITH NUMEROUS EPISODES THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF LAKE EFFECT SNOW
AND BLOWING SNOW THAT AFFECTED MANY LOCATIONS NEAR AND WEST OF U.S.
131. ALSO OF NOTE WERE THE BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES AND WIND
CHILLS ESPECIALLY ON THE 6TH AND 7TH AS WELL AS THE 21ST...27TH AND
28TH. ON THE 5TH...A STRONG AREA OF LOW PRESSURE BROUGHT MODERATE TO
HEAVY SNOW ACROSS MOST OF CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN.
NUMEROUS LOCATIONS REPORTED 10 TO 16 INCHES OF SNOW WITH THIS STORM.
VERY COLD AIR AND DANGEROUS WIND CHILLS OF -20 TO -40 SWEPT INTO THE
REGION ON THE 6TH AND 7TH...ENSURING MOST SCHOOLS WOULD BE CLOSED
FOR AT LEAST 2 DAYS AND MANY THAT WERE 3 OR 4 DAYS.

MOST AREAS AWAY FROM LAKE MICHIGAN HAD NUMEROUS DAYS WITH BELOW ZERO
READINGS AT NIGHT...AND IN SOME CASES DURING THE DAY AS WELL. GRAND
RAPIDS RECORDED A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE OF -9 ON THE 28TH. OTHER
AREAS LIKE LANSING AND JACKSON DIPPED DOWN INTO THE -10 TO -16 RANGE
AT TIMES.

THE 22ND THROUGH THE 28TH WAS AN ACTIVE LAKE EFFECT / ALBERTA
CLIPPER WITH LAKE ENHANCEMENT REGIME. STRONG WIND GUSTS WERE COMMON
DURING THIS TIME WITH PLENTY OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW AND
BLIZZARD-LIKE CONDITIONS AT TIMES. NUMEROUS SCHOOL CLOSURES OCCURRED
DURING THIS TIME FRAME. MOST AREAS REACHED SNOW DEPTHS OF BETWEEN 10
AND 20 INCHES BY THE END OF THE MONTH...WITH SOME LAKESHORE AREAS
REACHING OVER 20 INCHES ON THE GROUND.
