JULY 2016 CAME TO A CLOSE WITH TEMPERATURES THAT AVERAGED SLIGHTLY ABOVE
NORMALTHROUGH MOST OF CENTRAL LOWER MICHIGAN AND NEAR NORMAL IN FAR SOUTHWEST
LOWERMICHIGAN. AREA-WIDE PRECIPITATION TOTALS AVERAGED ABOVE NORMAL WITH
SPORADICLOCATIONS WELL ABOVE OR BELOW NORMAL.

IT WAS A MILD MONTH OVERALL. LESS THAN ONE-THIRD OF THE DAYS RESULTED
INTEMPERATURES THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED BELOW NORMAL. ABOUT HALF OF THE
BELOWNORMAL DAILY AVERAGES WERE CONFINED TO THE FIRST WEEK. MUCH OF THE
TIME...HIGHTEMPERATURES AT EACH CLIMATE SITE WERE SOLIDLY IN THE 80S WITH FEW
90SINTERSPERSED THROUGHOUT JULY. NO RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE
SET...BUTRELATIVELY WARM NIGHTS WERE COMMON. LANSING TIED A RECORD WARM LOW
TEMPERATUREOF 73 DEGREES ON JULY 28TH...PREVIOUSLY SET IN 1972. ELEVATED
HUMIDITY LEVELSPERIODICALLY MADE THEIR WAY INTO THE LOWER PENINSULA. THE
COMBINATION OF WARMTEMPERATURES AND MOISTURE LED TO A FEW SULTRY SUMMER DAYS.

PRECIPITATION...WHILE NOT AT ALL VOID...WAS HIT-OR-MISS. THE
CONVECTIVEENVIRONMENT PROVIDED FOR LOCALIZED HEAVY RAINFALL. A BULK OF THE
MONTHSMOISTURE WAS RECEIVED IN LARGE...SINGLE EVENTS. AS HIGH PRESSURE
STRENGTHENEDAND MEANDERED THROUGH THE MIDWEST...THE ACTIVE STORM TRACK SET UP
OVER THEGREAT LAKES REGION FROM TIME TO TIME. ON JULY 7TH...LOCALIZED HEAVY
RAINDEVELOPED OVER JACKSON MICHIGAN...LEADING TO URBAN FLOODING THAT AFFECTED
THEGROUND FLOOR OF THE HENRY FORD ALLEGIANCE HEALTH HOSPITAL. ON JULY 24TH
ANDJULY 29TH...THE MUSKEGON AND GRAND RAPIDS AREAS RECEIVED THEIR FAIR SHARE
OFRAINFALL. BOTH SITES BROKE DAILY RAINFALL RECORDS ON JULY 24TH...WITH
2.93INCHES OF RAIN RECORDED IN MUSKEGON AND 1.53 INCHES RECORDED IN GRAND
RAPIDS.MUSKEGONS MONTHLY RAINFALL RANKED 5TH WETTEST ON RECORD.

SEVERE WEATHER WAS FAIRLY TAME WITH A LIMITED NUMBER OF LOCAL STORM
REPORTS.ONLY MARGINAL STORM DAMAGE WAS PERIODICALLY NOTED IN JULY. DAMAGE THAT
DIDOCCUR WAS LARGELY RELATED TO GUSTY WINDS AND CONSISTED OF FEW
DOWNEDTREES...LIMBS AND POWERLINES ON A LOCAL SCALE. NO WIDESPREAD SEVERE
WEATHERDEVELOPED THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.
