Subject: Soliciting Comments on Prototype Period for Fire Detection
and
Monitoring Until November 1, 2024
The National Weather Service (NWS)is proposing to provide nationally
consistent notifications for fire detection. Western, Central, and
Southern Region NWS offices already demonstrate this service using
prototype software for detection on a voluntary basis, and this
service is
being considered for expansion to additional offices across NWS for
this
prototype period. For Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) that provide
this
service, if a fire is detected within the WFO County Warning Area and
a
Fire Weather Watch or Red Flag Warning is in place, the WFO will use
local
procedures or Annual Operating Plan (AOP) instructions to provide
fire
detection notifications to core partners. WFOs work closely with
local
land management and emergency management partners to define contact
information and procedures for fire detection.
Beginning April 1, 2024, the NWS will be accepting comments on the
fire
detection services. The comment period will last until November 1,
2024.
At the end of the prototype time period, a decision will be made
whether
or not to seek additional comments on the fire detection services as
experimental to support subsequent transitional to operational
status. As
this is a prototype project, there may be times when this service is
not
available.
