COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EUREKA CA
330 PM PDT TUE SEP 23 2014

...FIRST BIG SURF OF THE SEASON...

.THE FIRST BIG SURF OF THE SEASON WILL ARRIVE ON AREA BEACHES THAT
STILL HAVE THEIR FLATTER SUMERTIME BEACH SLOPES. THIS WILL ALLOW
THESE LARGER WAVES TO TRAVEL FARTHER UP THE BEACH THAN SIMILAR
ARRIVING WAVES LATER IN THE WINTER. BEACHGOERS SHOULD THEREFORE
STAY ESPECIALLY FAR BACK FROM THIS SURF AND AVOID ROCKS AND
JETTIES THAT CAN BE OVERTOPPED WITHOUT WARNING.

THESE FIRST BIG WAVES CAN ALSO CAUSE ENHANCED COASTAL EROSION BECAUSE
THE FLATTER SUMMERTIME BEACH SLOPES ALLOW THE WAVE ENERGY TO
TRAVEL FARTHER INLAND. STAY BACK FROM CLIFFS AND DUNE AREAS NEAR
THE SURF.
