...OCTOBER WAS WARMER AND DRIER THAN NORMAL IN NORFOLK...

OCTOBER IN NORFOLK BROUGHT A ROLLER-COASTER OF TEMPERATURES THAT
LEANED TOWARD THE WARM SIDE. AS IN SEPTEMBER...MUCH OF THE WETTER
WEATHER IN EASTERN NEBRASKA MISSED THE NORFOLK AREA. THE AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 52.9 DEGREES WAS 1.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL...WHILE THE
TOTAL PRECIPITATION OF 0.97 INCHES WAS 1.10 INCHES BELOW NORMAL.

OCTOBER ARRIVED ON A WARM AND WET NOTE...BEFORE COOLER TEMPERATURES
SET IN ON THE 3RD AND 4TH. SWINGS BETWEEN ABOVE AND BELOW NORMAL
TEMPERTURES CONTINUED THROUGH THE 18TH...WITH LIGHT PRECIPITATION ON
TWO DAYS IN THAT PERIOD. THE FIRST FREEZE OF FALL OCCURRED ON THE
4TH WITH A LOW OF 31 DEGREES...WHICH WAS ONE DAY LATER THAN THE
PERIOD-OF-RECORD AVERAGE FIRST FREEZE DATE OF THE 3RD.

FROM THE 19TH THROUGH THE 27TH...TEMPERATURES WERE ABOVE NORMAL ON
ALL BUT ONE DAY...WITH A PROLONGED PERIOD OF HIGHS IN THE 70S FROM
THE 19TH THROUGH THE 26TH. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 78 ON THE 26TH
WAS THE WARMEST OF THE MONTH. DRY WEATHER ALSO PERSISTED FROM THE
14TH THROUGH THE 31ST...WITH THE DISTINCT EXCEPTION OF THE
22ND...WHICH SAW 0.58 INCHES OF RAIN. TEMPERATURES DIPPED NEAR TO
BELOW AVERAGE FROM THE 28TH TO THE 31ST...AND THE COLDEST HIGH AND
LOW TEMPERATURES OF THE MONTH BOTH OCCURRED ON THE 31ST...WITH A
HIGH OF JUST 43 AND A LOW OF 21.

THAT FREEZE ON THE 31ST WAS THE FIRST FREEZE OF THE FALL
SEASON...AND IT ARRIVED 15 DAYS AFTER THE PERIOD-OF-RECORD AVERAGE
FOR OMAHA. IT WAS THE 16TH LATEST FIRST FREEZE ON RECORD IN OMAHA.
