WINTER 2014/15 WAS A TALE OF TWO SEASONS. AFTER AN EARLY BOUT OF
COLD AND SNOW AROUND THANKSGIVING, DECEMBER TOOK A TURN TOWARD
WARMER WEATHER WITH VERY LITTLE SNOW. BY CHRISTMAS PORTLAND WAS
EXPERIENCING RECORD WARMTH WITH ALL OF THE EARLY SEASON SNOW PACK
MELTING BEFORE CHRISTMAS DAY. DECEMBER FINISHED AS THE 4TH WARMEST
ON RECORD. BUT THE WEATHER PATTERN BEGAN TO SHIFT JUST IN TIME FOR
NEW YEARS, WITH COLDER WEATHER BEING DOMINANT THROUGH JANUARY AND
ESPECIALLY INTO FEBRUARY, CULMINATING IN THE COLDEST FEBRUARY ON
RECORD. A PERIOD OF PERSISTENT SNOWY WEATHER BEGAN TOWARD THE END OF
JANUARY AND LASTED THROUGH THE END OF FEBRUARY. A NEW SNOWSTORM
BROUGHT SNOWFALL JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER DAY. THE BIGGEST SNOWSTORM
WAS THE BLIZZARD WHICH BROUGHT 23.8 INCHES OF SNOW ON JANUARY 27 AND
28. BY THE END OF FEBRUARY THERE WAS STILL MORE THAN 20 INCHES OF
SNOW ON THE GROUND IN PORTLAND.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE WINTER WAS 22.8 DEGREES WHICH WAS
2.8 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS WINTER SEASON INCLUDED THE 4TH
WARMEST DECEMBER AND THE COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. THE WARMEST
WEATHER WAS ON DECEMBER 1 WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHED 59 DEGREES.
THE COLDEST WAS FEBRUARY 24 WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DROPPED TO 11 BELOW
ZERO. THE WARMEST WINTER SEASON ON RECORD WAS 2001/02 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 31.3 DEGREES. THE COLDEST WAS 1970/71 WITH
AN AVERAGE OF 17.9 DEGREES.

THERE WERE 18 DAYS WHICH FELL TO ZERO DEGREES OR COLDER THIS WINTER.

WINTER OF 1993/94 WHEN THERE WERE 20 DAYS THAT REACHED ZERO OR
COLDER.

A TOTAL OF 13.75 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION WAS MEASURED THIS WINTER.
THIS IS 3.10 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THE MOST PRECIPITATION FELL FROM
DECEMBER 9 THROUGH 11 WHEN 2.68 INCHES OF PRECIPITATION WAS
MEASURED. THIS MARKS THE THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR OF ABOVE NORMAL WINTER
PRECIPITATION. THE LAST TIME THE WINTER SEASON SAW SIGNIFICANTLY
BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION WAS THE WINTER OF 2006/07 AT ONLY 7.18
INCHES. THE WETTEST WINTER SEASON ON RECORD WAS 1934/35 WITH 20.49
INCHES. THE DRIEST WAS 1871/72 WITH 4.12 INCHES.

SNOWFALL FOR THE WINTER SEASON TOTALED 78.3 INCHES WHICH WAS 34.4
INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS WAS THE 12TH SNOWIEST WINTER ON RECORD,
RANKING JUST ABOVE LAST YEAR (2013/14 78.3 INCHES) AND JUST BELOW
THE YEAR BEFORE THAT (2012/13 81.7 INCHES). SNOWFALL FOR THE ENTIRE
