FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ANCHORAGE AK
350 PM AKDT FRI MAY 27 2016

...FIRE WEATHER WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH
LATE SATURDAY NIGHT FOR THE SUSITNA VALLEY...

.DISCUSSION...

WITH A STRONG RIDGE IN PLACE ACROSS SOUTHWEST ALASKA...NORTHERLY
FLOW ALOFT WILL KEEP SOUTHCENTRAL UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A DRY AND
WARM DOWNSLOPE FLOW OFF THE ALASKA RANGE. SATURDAY WILL BE THE
WARMEST AND DRIEST DAY OF THE MEMORIAL WEEKEND...WITH NEAR
CRITICAL WEATHER CONDITIONS ACROSS THE COPPER BASIN AND MATANUSKA
VALLEY. ACROSS THE SUSITNA VALLEY...TEMPERATURES WILL BE THE
WARMEST...AND MIN RH VALUES THE LOWEST WITH INCREASING NORTHERLY
WINDS DEVELOPING IN THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING. THE EXACT
STRENGTH OF THESE WINDS IS LESS CERTAIN DUE TO UNCERTAINTY WITH A
TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE FARTHER EAST OVER THE YUKON...HENCE THE
RATIONALE FOR A FIRE WEATHER WATCH AT THIS TIME. SHOULD THIS
SCENARIO DEVELOP...MIN RH RECOVERIES WILL BE RATHER SLOW INTO THE
LATE EVENING AS DOWNSLOPE WINDS WOULD KEEP RH VALUES RATHER LOW.
IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED TROUGH WILL BE THE SLIGHT
CHANCE FOR ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE WRANGELL MOUNTAINS IN
THE LATE AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

ON SUNDAY...SLIGHTLY COOLER BUT STILL DRY AIR WILL BE IN PLACE AS
A TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE WEAKENS THE STOUT HIGH OVER SOUTHCENTRAL.
HOWEVER...THIS WILL ALSO INCREASE THE CHANCE FOR MOUNTAIN SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS...WITH THE THUNDERSTORM THREAT ACROSS THE COPPER
BASIN. SHOWER THREATS WILL CONTINUE INTO MONDAY.
