FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
321 PM PDT FRI AUG 22 2014

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...GENERAL NORTHWESTERLY FLOW WILL CONTINUE
THROUGH THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL KEEP TEMPERATURES NEAR NORMAL AND
HUMIDITY A LITTLE BELOW NORMAL THE NEXT FEW DAYS...ALONG WITH
GUSTY NORTH TO NORTHWEST RIDGETOP WINDS. WARM...DRY...UNSTABLE
WEATHER IS LOOKING LIKELY NEXT WEEK AS AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE BUILDS
OVERHEAD AND A SURFACE THERMAL TROUGH DEVELOPS ACROSS OREGON.

.DISCUSSION...AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL REMAIN OVER THE INTERIOR
NORTHWEST THROUGH THE WEEKEND...WITH STRONG NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT
THROUGH THE PERIOD. THIS WILL KEEP OUR TEMPERATURES FAIRLY CLOSE
TO AUGUST NORMALS THE NEXT FEW DAYS...THOUGH IT WILL BE A BIT
DRIER THAN NORMAL ESPECIALLY IN THE HIGHER CASCADES. THE MARINE
LAYER WILL LIKELY BE A BIT SHALLOWER TONIGHT THAN LAST NIGHT...
DUE TO SOME WEAK SUBSIDENCE IN BETWEEN SYSTEMS THAT ARE RIDING
ALONG THE NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT. THE CURRENT SYSTEM IS TRIGGERING
ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS NORTH OF MOUNT HOOD...MAINLY
EAST OF THE CREST. A SIMILAR SYSTEM MAY PRODUCE SIMILAR SHOWERS
FOR SUNDAY.

ABOVE THE MARINE LAYER...SOME EXPOSED RIDGETOP LOCATIONS ARE
LIKELY TO SEE MARGINAL HUMIDITY RECOVERY AT BEST...ALONG WITH
BRISK NORTH TO NORTHWEST WINDS. EVENTUALLY A LARGE UPPER LEVEL
RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO MOVE IN FROM THE PACIFIC
NEXT WEEK. MEANWHILE A THERMAL TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO EXTEND
NORTHWARD FROM CALIFORNIA INTO SW OREGON. ALL OF THIS WILL
PROMOTE EVEN WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS WITH NORTH TO NORTHEAST
WINDS POSSIBLE EARLY NEXT WEEK. BY MIDWEEK IT APPEARS THIS THERMAL
TROUGH WILL EXPAND ACROSS MUCH OF OREGON AND EASTERN WASHINGTON...
AS TEMPERATURES WARM INTO THE 90S FOR THE INLAND VALLEYS TUESDAY
OR WEDNESDAY. THESE DAYS WOULD LIKELY SEE NEAR-HAINES 6
CONDITIONS WITH STEEP LOW TO MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES AND VERY DRY
AIR ACROSS THE REGION...POTENTIALLY PROVIDING AN ENVIRONMENT TO
FOSTER ANY HOLDOVERS FROM RECENT LIGHTNING EPISODES. WEAGLE
