FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR SW VA...SE WV AND NW NC
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG VA
520 AM EDT WED APR 23 2014

RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 8 PM EDT
THIS EVENING FOR THE VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE...INCLUDING THE
SHENANDOAH...ROANOKE...AND NEW RIVER VALLEYS.

.DISCUSSION...

...BREEZY CONDITIONS TODAY WITH LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY...

A COLD FRONT PASSED THROUGH THE AREA LAST NIGHT. IN ITS WAKE...
DRY BREEZY CONDITIONS HAVE DEVELOPED AND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH
THE DAY. THE STRONGEST WINDS WILL BE FOUND NEAR THE BLUE RIDGE
PARKWAY...FROM SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA...NORTH INTO THE SHENANDOAH
VALLEY...WHERE SUSTAINED WINDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH...GUSTS OF 25
TO 30 MPH...AND AN AFTERNOON HUMIDITY MINIMUM NEAR 20 PERCENT
WILL BE COMMON. FOR MANY AREAS NEAR THE BLUE RIDGE...IT HAS BEEN
7 DAYS SINCE MEASURABLE RAINFALL HAS OCCURRED. THIS HAS ALLOWED
FINE FUEL MOISTURE TO DROP BELOW 7 PERCENT. CONCERN TODAY IS
FOR RAPID FIRE SPREAD IF A WILDFIRE OCCURS.

HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD OVERHEAD BY THURSDAY MORNING. THIS WILL
RESULT IN DIMINISHING WINDS TONIGHT...LIGHT AND VARIABLE WINDS
THURSDAY. IT WILL REMAIN DRY THURSDAY WITH NO RAIN EXPECTED.

THE NEXT...CHANCE...OF SHOWERS IS FRIDAY. A COLD FRONT IS
FORECAST TO CROSS THE AREA FRIDAY MORNING. SIMILAR TO THE LAST
FRONTAL PASSAGE...RAINFALL IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE WIDESPREAD WITH
AMOUNTS OF A TENTH OF AN INCH OR LESS.
