HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SATELLITE INTERPRETATION MESSAGE

BASED ON DATA THROUGH 0000 UTC AUGUST 30 2016

AT 2 PM HST...HURRICANE MADELINE WAS CENTERED AT 18.7N
145.9W...OR APPROXIMATELY 615 MILES EAST OF HILO HAWAII. DEEP
CONVECTION EXTENDS ABOUT 125 MILES FROM THE CENTER WITH A WIDE
OVERCAST BAND OF CUMULUS /CU/ WRAPPING INTO THE SYSTEM. THIS BAND
EXTENDS FROM FAR NORTHWEST OF 25N 140W AND INTO THE SYSTEM AND IS
BETWEEN 250 AND 300 MILES WIDE.

A WEAK LOW...APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES SOUTH OF HONOLULU
HAWAII...CONTINUES TO PRODUCE DISORGANIZED CONVECTION BETWEEN 19N
AND 14N AND FROM 158W TO 162W. UPPER LEVEL SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW
OVER THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS IS HELPING TO DRAW CIRRUS /CI/
BLOW OFF FROM THE CONVECTION OVER THE STATE.

THE INTERTROPICAL CONVERGENCE ZONE /ITCZ/ IS PRODUCING CONVECTION
ALONG 10N...MAINLY BETWEEN 140W AND 155W...ALSO BETWEEN 160W AND
170W. CLOUD TOPS IN THIS REGION REACH UPWARDS OF 49 THOUSAND FEET.

A FRONT INTERSECTS THE FAR NORTHWESTERN CORNER OF THE
AREA...BRINGING AN AREA OF LAYERED CLOUDS NORTHWEST OF A LINE FROM
30N 165W TO 20N 180W.

THE MAIN HAWAIIAN ISLANDS REMAIN FAIRLY QUIET THIS AFTERNOON...
WITH FEW TO SCATTERED CLOUDS JUST UPSTREAM OF THE STATE. THE NORTH
THROUGH EAST SLOPES ON THE BIG ISLAND AND MAUI HAVE OVERCAST LOW
CLOUDS BUILT UP...BUT SHOWER ACTIVITY REMAINS MINIMAL. THE KONA
COAST...FROM KONA TO SOUTH POINT ON THE BIG ISLAND...HAVE OVERCAST
CLOUDS BUILT UP ALONG THE SEA BREEZE. THIS IS THE SAME FOR THE
SOUTHEAST SLOPES OF HALEAKALA ON MAUI. THE NORTH THROUGH EAST
SECTIONS ON THE OTHER ISLANDS HAVE SCATTERED TO BROKEN LOW CLOUDS.
THE REMAINING AREAS HAVE PASSING FEW TO SCATTERED CLOUDS.
