...NWS METEOROLOGISTS CONFIRM A TORNADO OCCURRED IN GREENVILLE
COUNTY SOUTH CAROLINA AND POLK COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA...

The National Weather Service office in Greenville-Spartanburg SC
is currently conducting a storm survey in the Tryon area related
to damage that occurred the evening of October 8 2017. Preliminary
results confirm an EF1 Tornado touched-down on the West side of
Lake Lanier in Greenville County, SC which lifted and touched down
again in Tryon in Polk County, NC. The path of the tornado
through Tryon was one half to three quarters of a mile long.

A final assessment including precise location, path length, and
other results of the survey are expected to be completed and
transmitted via a Public Information Statement this evening.

It will also be available on our website at weather.gov/gsp.

For reference: the Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes
into the following categories:

EF0...Wind speeds 65 to 85 mph
EF1...Wind speeds 86 to 110 mph
EF2...Wind speeds 111 to 135 mph
EF3...Wind speeds 136 to 165 mph
EF4...Wind speeds 166 to 200 mph
EF5...Wind speeds greater than 200 mph
