...NWS METEOROLOGISTS CONFIRM TORNADO DAMAGE FROM EXTREME
SOUTHEASTERN RUTHERFORD COUNTY TO NORTHERN ALEXANDER COUNTY NORTH
CAROLINA...

The National Weather Service office in Greer SC has conducted a
damage survey across a large area stretching from extreme
southeastern Rutherford County, North Carolina, across parts of
Cleveland, Lincoln, Catawba, Burke, and Caldwell counties
including communities on the western side of Hickory, to the
northern part of Alexander County, North Carolina, almost to the
Wilkes County line. The data obtained from the survey will
continue to be evaluated tonight and Thursday.

The survey team has reached a preliminary conclusion that the
severe thunderstorm on October 23, 2017, produced a wide and
complex swath of straight-line wind damage with several embedded
tornadoes, some of which produced damage rated at EF1 along
relatively long paths. At least one section of tornado damage at
the Hickory Regional Airport has been assigned an EF2 rating
pending further analysis.

A final assessment of the tornadoes, including specific details
of the damage, paths, and lengths, is expected to be completed
and transmitted via a Public Information Statement by 500 PM EDT
Thursday.

The assessment will also be available on our website at
weather.gov/gsp.
