...WICHITA EXPERIENCES WARMEST CHRISTMAS ON RECORD...

It sure didn`t look like Christmas this year. It looked more like
spring as south winds sustained primarily from 35 to 45 mph with 50
to 60 mph gusts tore through most of the state. The howling south
winds sent temperatures soaring into the 65 to 70 degree for nearly
all areas. There was even a line of strong to severe thunderstorms
that raced northeast through much of Central Kansas during mid-day
with winds around 60 mph. In Lincoln County, a roof was blown off a
barn 1 mile east of Beverly.

Wichita`s high temperature on Christmas Day was 67, which broke the
record of 65 last set in 1960. Wichita`s record high for December is
an amazing 83 degrees set in 1955 on Christmas Eve in 1955. This is
8 degrees hotter then the 2nd place occupants; December 7th, 1966,
the 11th in 1939 and the 13th in 1921 on which the highs were 75.
Salina`s 68-degree high was 1 degree shy of the record set in 1922,
as was Chanute`s 70-degree high, also set in 1922.

Just 1 week earlier, on the 18th, an Arctic airmass that invaded the
Great Plains sent temperature tumbling to record lows. Russell dove
to a numbing 16 below zero which "torched" the daily record of 8
below set in 1983. Great Bend was frost-bitten by a low of 15 below
which shattered their record of zero set in 1983 and in 1964. Salina
chilled out with a low of 10 below which tied the record set in 1983
and Wichita tumbled to 10 below which shattered the mark of 4 below
also set in 1983.

The Arctic front that surged into Kansas produced Wichita`s only
measurable snowfall when 2 inches were measured on the 17th at
Eisenhower Airport. Snowfalls from 1 to 3 inches were reported in
nearly all areas.
