...Afternoon Area Forecast Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(This afternoon through Monday)
Issued at 220 PM EDT Sun Apr 14 2024

Generally quiet conditions will persist through the forecast area
through the short term. A weak shortwave will pass through this
afternoon, but the forecast area is expected to remain largely rain
free. However, a few light (emphasis on light) sprinkles could occur
this afternoon associated with the shortwave passing overhead as
some increased Gulf moisture into the atmospheric column (PWATS ~0.8-
1.0") coincides with surface based instability (MUCAPE <500 J/kg).
Chances of rain are very low end (10% or less), but not zero. Should
this disturbance generate any showers, they are expected to be light
and fleeting. Despite increased cloud coverage compared to yesterday
thanks to the aforementioned return of moisture, temperatures will
warm considerably to some of the warmest we`ve had this year.
Outside of areas of higher elevations, most locations will achieve
high temperatures in the low to mid 80s this afternoon. With strong
mixing today in addition to the increased surface pressure gradient
from the surface high pressure to our south and the low pressure
system to our northeast across New England, will continue to see
some gusty conditions for portions of the forecast area with the
strongest gusts forecast across far north Georgia between 20 and 25
mph. Tomorrow, similar conditions will persist with slightly warmer
maximum daytime temperatures. Winds will remain out of the
west/southwest but gusts will finally back off (a nice reprieve from
the last several days where winds have been quite breezy) as the
high pressure shifts off to the east. Overnight low temperatures
will be relatively warm, generally running in the 50s across the
forecast area as high cloud coverage keeps temperatures elevated.

.LONG TERM...
(Tuesday morning through next Saturday)
Issued at 220 PM EDT Sun Apr 14 2024

Continuing the dry streak into Tuesday as mid level ridging sits in
place over much of the eastern CONUS. By Wednesday morning, a low
pressure system is expected to track into the great lakes region,
moving north of the ridging pattern solidly in place over the
southeast. With the parent low tracking northward into the great
lakes, the resulting energy is forecasted to be limited which will
overall limit the extent of the cold front pushing into Georgia.
Expecting north Georgia generally north of I-20 to experience
showers and thunderstorms. Considering the energy is well displaced
to the north, not expecting any severe weather associated with these
increased rain chances. Moving into Thursday temps will continue to
warm with highs in the mid to upper 80s for much of the area into
Friday with a stray 90 degree temp reading not being out of the
question for central GA.

Rain chances come to the area (north GA) again for the weekend with
another cold front approaching the area and resulting in a slight
cool down with highs Sunday currently in the 60s to 70s for the
area. There does remain model discrepancy over this system and it`s
timing, but overall looking at scattered amounts of rainfall with
under an inch expected.
