Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Gray ME
304 PM EDT Mon Apr 22 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure slides south of the area Tuesday for warmer and
dry conditions. Low pressure approaches the region Wednesday
bringing the next chance for rain. High pressure then builds in
towards the end of the week. A warming trend can be expected
over the weekend with chance of showers.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...
Breezy conditions die off this evening as high pressure crests
across New England overnight tonight. A cool and dry night is in
store as strong radiational cooling conditions set up. Temps
drop into the 20s overnight across most inland locations, with
lows near 30 along the immediate coast and southern New
Hampshire. Otherwise, a quiet night is expected with no precip
across the forecast area.

&&

.SHORT TERM /7 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Winds turn more southerly tomorrow as high pressure moves east
of the area, helping to usher in some warmer and more moist air.
The southerly flow keeps temps cooler across much of Maine,
with highs ranging from the low 50s along the immediate coast to
near 60 through the foothills. Through New Hampshire, temps
warm into the 60s across most locations, with southern locations
and the Connecticut River Valley warming into the mid 60s.
While more moist air moves into Maine, conditions will be dry
across NH again tomorrow, with dry and breezy conditions leading
to a heightened fire danger again tomorrow.

Clouds begin to increase ahead of an approaching cold front
tomorrow night, with rain showers likely pushing into western
and northern locations late tomorrow night and toward daybreak
on Wednesday. Lows quickly drop into the 30s across most inland
locations tomorrow evening, and then begin to slowly rise
through the overnight as clouds increase and more moisture moves
into the area.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A short wave trough with attendant low pressure system will move
across the forecast area on Wednesday with categorical PoPs but
with rainfall amounts generally one quarter inch or less. The
rain likely end as snow showers in the mountains.

Thereafter, high pressure settles over northern New England
starting thursday and lingers Friday before moving offshore
Friday night. Despite plentiful sunshine temperatures will
struggle to get to average.

The deep layer ridging breaks down and moves eastward over the
weekend allow for a renewed chance of showers and perhaps a few
thunderstorms.

&&

.AVIATION /19Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Short Term...VFR conditions prevail through tomorrow evening
across all terminals. Ceilings then lower tomorrow night, with
some MVFR ceilings possible and showers likely across western
terminals by daybreak on Wednesday.

Long Term...Mainly VFR Thu-Fri. Wed looks to average MVFR with
showers.

&&

.MARINE...
Short Term...High pressure crosses the waters tonight. Winds
turn southerly tomorrow as the high moves away, with a period of
SCA conditions likely across the southern waters tomorrow
afternoon with wind gusts up to 30kts. Winds ease with southerly
flow continuing ahead of an approaching cold front tomorrow
night.

Long Term...Low pressure will move over the waters on Wednesday.
As winds turn NW late in the day or evening, they will increase
to SCA levels with building seas. SCA conditions last through
Thursday morning. Thereafter, more tranquil conditions with high
pressure Friday.
