In 1989, non thunderstorm winds gusting around an
incredible 120 mph roared through parts of Wyoming and
Colorado. Further east in the Central Plains, gusts
reached 60 to 70 mph. The blowing dust reduced
visibilities to as low as a couple hundred feet. In
Northwest Kansas, the resulting soil erosion damaged
nearly 5 million acres of wheat. In 1870, the term
"blizzard" was applied for the first time to a storm
producing heavy snow and high winds. The term was
applied to a winter storm that walloped Iowa and
Minnesota.
