...MEDFORD OREGON WEATHER REVIEW: March 2024...

March started with a strong system that brought moderate
precipitation and gusty winds to parts of southern Oregon and
northern California. This system brought nearly 0.75 inches of
rain to Medford on the 1st day of the month. However, this only
met the halfway point for the current daily rainfall record on the
1st which is 1.43 inches from 1972. The second rainiest day was
the 5th with 0.62 inches recorded. Although not as wet as
January, Medford received almost 2.5 inches, which is over 0.60
inches above the monthly normal. Snow levels fell to the valley
floors for the first few days of March, and on the 2nd there was
0.4 inches recorded at the office. On the 9th of March the
observed snow depth at Crater Lake NP was 132 inches, 32 inches
above the normal snow depth for that day. The snow was piled up to
the Steel Visitor Center camera!

Temperatures were just shy of normal with this month being less
than a degree colder than the average monthly temperature. There
were only 5 days where temperatures fell to 32 degrees or below,
and those were in the first half of the month. By mid-March high
pressure brought warm and dry conditions, and temperatures were
more typical of May as they were near 15 degrees above normal.
Between the 15th and 19th, highs were 74 degrees or warmer. If you
can remember back to January, the 30th saw a high of 73 degrees,
so this is not the first time Medford has seen 70 degrees in 2024.
It is, however, the first time Medford hit 80 degrees this year
as there was a high of 80 on the 18th. This was just a degree off
from reaching the current daily high temperature record that was
set in 1928.

The average temperature for the month was 47.6 degrees, which is
0.7 degrees below normal. The average maximum temperature was
58.3 degrees, which is 1.1 degrees below normal. The average
minimum temperature was 37.0 degrees, which is 0.2 degrees below
normal. The highest temperature for the month was 80 degrees which
occurred on the 18th. The lowest temperature for the month was 28
degrees which occurred on the 8th.

There were 10 clear days, 11 partly cloudy days, and 10 cloudy
days.

Total precipitation for the month was 2.45 inches which is 0.64
inches above normal. Total precipitation for the water year
(beginning October 1st) is 13.86 inches which is 0.01 inches above
normal. Calendar year precipitation is 8.71 inches which is 2.22
inches above normal.

The average wind speed for the month was 3.9 mph. The fastest
recorded two-minute wind speed was 25 mph from the southwest
which occurred on the 23rd. The peak wind was 38 mph from the
southwest which occurred on the 23rd.

The highest pressure for the month was 30.43 inches on the 13th.
The lowest pressure for the month was 29.39 inches on the 1st.
