...A SLICK AND BITTERLY COLD START TO THE NEW YEAR...ALTHOUGH
TEMPERATURES WARMED WELL ABOVE NORMAL THE 2ND HALF OF JANUARY...

2014 SIGNED OFF WITH THE INVASION OF AN ARCTIC AIRMASS THAT MADE ITS
PRESENCE FELT THRU JANUARY 2ND. THE SHALLOW ARCTIC AIRMASS PLAYED A
VITAL ROLE IN THE FIRST SHOT OF WINTRY PRECIPITATION...INITIALLY IN
THE FORM OF FREEZING DRIZZLE...ACROSS SOUTH-CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST
KANSAS ON THE 1ST. A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY WAS ISSUED FOR THESE
AREAS FROM IN THE EVENING OF THE 1ST UNTIL LATE IN THE MORNING OF
THE 2ND. ALTHOUGH ICE ACCUMULATIONS WERE MINOR...ROADS AND HIGHWAYS
WERE STILL QUITE SLICK.

A REINFORCING SHOT OF ARCTIC AIR INVADED THE NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE 3RD
AND 4TH AND WOULD PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN THE SPREADING LIGHT TO
MODERATE SNOW ACROSS CENTRAL AND SOUTH-CENTRAL KANSAS...WHERE 2 TO 5
INCH ACCUMULATIONS WOULD OCCUR BY MIDDAY ON THE 4TH. ODDLY ENOUGH...
IT WOULD BE THE LAST MEASURABLE SNOWFALL FOR THE REST OF THE MONTH.
ANOTHER SHOT OF ARCTIC AIR SURGED SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION ON THE
7TH. THE ASSOCIATED ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE AREA WAS SO STRONG...NEAR-
RECORD HIGH SURFACE PRESSURES WERE RECORDED ACROSS THE REGION.
WEATHER EQUIPMENT AT WICHITA EISENHOWER NATIONAL AIRPORT RECORDED A
PRESSURE OF 1053.1 MILLIBARS AROUND 11 AM ON THE 7TH...ITS 3RD
HIGHEST RECORDED PRESSURE SINCE 1980.

AROUND THE MIDWAY POINT...WEATHER MORE TYPICAL OF SPRING ARRIVED AS
STRONG HIGH PRESSURE RIDGES TRAVERSING THE GREAT PLAINS WOULD GET
PUSHED EAST BY LOW PRESSURE CENTERS STRENGTHENING OVER THE WEST AND
NORTHWEST PLAINS. THIS WOULD ENABLE WESTERLY WINDS TO DOMINATE THE
REGION FOR MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF JANUARY. WITH THE PREDOMINANTLY
"DOWNSLOPE" FLOW SPREADING DRIER AIR ACROSS KANSAS...TEMPERATURES
SOARED TO THE POINT THAT SEVERAL HIGH TEMPERATURES RECORDS WERE SET
OR TIED. WICHITA REACHED AT LEAST 60 DEGREES 8 DAYS DURING THE
MONTH...WHICH TIED 1967 FOR THE 2ND HIGHEST NUMBER OF 60+ DEGREE
DAYS FOR JANUARY SINCE 1889.

THE RECORDS THAT WERE SET OR TIED...AND THEIR RESPECTIVE DATES...ARE
LISTED BELOW. MANY OF THESE DAILY RECORDS WERE ALSO SOME OF THE
WARMEST JANUARY TEMPERATURES EVER EXPERIENCED FOR THAT PARTICULAR
SITE.

              NEW RECORD OLD RECORD
WICHITA:
JANUARY 18TH: 65 65 IN 1901 (TIED)
JANUARY 19TH: 73 70 IN 1904
JANUARY 26TH: 74 69 IN 1953
JANUARY 27TH: 73 69 IN 2013

SALINA:
JANUARY 26TH: 71 70 IN 1951
JANUARY 27TH: 75 68 IN 1934
JANUARY 28TH: 74 74 IN 2013 (TIED)

CHANUTE:
JANUARY 28TH: 75 75 IN 2013 (TIED)

RUSSELL:
JANUARY 16TH: 63 62 IN 1986
JANUARY 27TH: 83! 65 IN 2002

AS ONE CAN EASILY TELL...THE MOST DRAMATIC TEMPERATURE RECORD THIS
MONTH OCCURRED ON THE 27TH WHEN TEMPERATURES AT RUSSELL SOARED LIKE
F15 EAGLES. THE 83 DEGREE HIGH ROASTED THE MARK OF 65 SET IN 2002 BY
AN AMAZING 18 DEGREES!
