FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
237 PM PDT SUN AUG 2 2015

...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE FOR MUCH OF SOUTHWEST
WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON THROUGH MONDAY MORNING...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS COMING UP FROM THE
SOUTH MAY AFFECT MUCH OF NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON
THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. A STRONG UPPER RIDGE REMAINS OVER THE
REGION BUT WILL WEAKEN AND SHIFT EAST EARLY IN THE WEEK....
ALLOWING AN UPPER TROUGH TO PUSH INTO THE NORTHWEST. THIS WILL
BRING A GRADUAL COOLING AND MOISTENING TREND. A SLIGHT CHANCE OF
THUNDERSTORMS WILL CONTINUE FOR THE CENTRAL OREGON CASCADES INTO
THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK. THE WEEK IS EXPECTED TO END WITH A
BRIEF WARMING TREND...BUT ANOTHER COOL TROUGH MAY BE ON TAP FOR
NEXT WEEKEND.

.DISCUSSION...MID-LEVEL MONSOONAL MOISTURE WILL CONTINUE TO FEED
UP INTO NORTHWEST OREGON AND SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON FROM THE SOUTH
TONIGHT. RESULTANT SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS MAY AFFECT
THE REGION INTO MONDAY AM. THUNDERSTORM CHANCES APPEAR TO BE
HIGHEST THIS EVENING FURTHER SOUTH AS AN UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE
DISTURBANCE APPROACHES THE REGION. THE THREAT THEN EXPANDS NORTHWARD
OVERNIGHT INTO EARLY MON AM. THE MOISTURE IS ELEVATED...SO THERE
MAY NOT BE MUCH PRECIPITATION EXCEPT DIRECTLY UNDER STRONGER STORM
CORES. DUE TO THE DRY AIR NEAR THE SURFACE...GUSTY DOWNDRAFT
WINDS MAY ACCOMPANY THUNDERSTORMS.

AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE REMAINS OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST CURRENTLY
...BUT IT WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN AND PUSH EAST OVER THE NEXT COUPLE
OF DAYS. THE THERMAL TROUGH THAT HAS BEEN OVER THE REGION HAS NOW
FINALLY PUSHED EAST OF THE CASCADES...WHICH WILL ALLOW ONSHORE
FLOW TO INCREASE. INCREASING CONVECTIVE CLOUDS DRIFTING IN FROM THE
SOUTH HAVE COOLED TEMPERATURES CONSIDERABLY TODAY. THE COOLING AND
MOISTENING TREND WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE FIRST OF THE UPCOMING
WEEK AS AN UPPER TROUGH PUSHES INTO THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. THERE
WILL BE MORE CHANCES FOR THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH AT LEAST
TUESDAY...BUT WITH WESTERLY FLOW ALOFT INCREASING DUE TO THE
APPROACHING TROUGH...EXPECT CHANCES WILL MOSTLY BE LIMITED TO
NEAR THE OREGON CASCADE CREST. THE LONGER RANGE FORECAST MODELS
INDICATE A SLIGHT WARMING TREND TOWARD THE END OF THE WEEK WITH
A CLOSED LOW MOVING ONSHORE OVER CENTRAL OR NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
THIS LOW DOES NOT APPEAR TO POSE MUCH OF A THREAT FOR US AT THIS
TIME...BUT IT WILL BEAR WATCHING. ANOTHER COOL UPPER LEVEL TROUGH
MAY BE ON TAP FOR NEXT WEEKEND. PYLE
