Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
412 AM CDT Wed Apr 10 2024

Today:

Temperatures have bottomed out in the lower to mid 30s over the
north to the mid 40s in the south early this morning. Winds are from
the south southwest at 5 to 10 mph through much of the region with a
few clouds passing over the state.

Low pressure in northern Minnesota will track east today with
another area of low pressure in the south tracking northeast this
afternoon into Thursday. Today will see increasing clouds from the
south with partly sunny conditions expected by the afternoon hours.
Highs will generally be in the lower 70s over most of the state with
a few upper 60s in the east.

Tonight and beyond:

Tonight the two storm systems will bring small chances for light
rain chances over northern and eastern areas of the state as both
systems track nearer Iowa. Though temperatures will cool Thursday,
winds are expected to increase on the back side of storm tracking to
our east. This may result in an increase in fire danger over the far
southwest as winds reach 25 with gusts to near 40 mph by Thursday
afternoon. Winds will continue brisk into the evening and overnight
hours Thursday night before lessening late Friday morning. Highs
Thursday are expected in the upper 50s in the northwest to the lower
to mid 60s in the southeast with Friday showing some recovery in the
afternoon as westerly winds return. A fast and weak ridge of high
pressure will arrive and depart the region Friday as low pressure
develops to the west of Iowa Saturday morning. Temperatures will
quickly rise by Saturday afternoon as southwest winds and a warmer
airmass arrives. Highs will reach the upper 70s to around 80. On
Sunday, rather warm air will precede a weak wind shift late in the
day. This will allow highs to reach the 70s to lower 80s by
afternoon making for a great afternoon. Over the next 24 to 36
hours, a more powerful area of low pressure will gather strength in
the Western Plains. As south flow strengthens from Texas to Iowa,
surface moisture will become more plentiful along with highs in the
70s to lower 80s on Monday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected
to build across the region by Monday evening and overnight into
Tuesday with a risk for some stronger storms over portions of Iowa
into surrounding states south and east.
