Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD
358 AM CDT Wed Apr 17 2024

.DISCUSSION...

A few light scattered showers continue this morning. They will
taper off by mid morning, with little additional accumulation.
Winds today will be northwesterly at 20-25 mph with gusts up to 35
mph. These will diminish after noon as the low pressure
responsible for them moves off to the east. Temperatures will be
in the 50s and 60s, with dew points in the 40s east of I-29, and
in the upper 30s west. Lows will be in the 40s. Relative humidity
will be in the 40-50% range at the minimum. This limits fire
danger despite the gusty winds.

Late Wednesday night into Thursday afternoon, another round of
showers will bring 0.1-0.5 inches of rain to the areas along and
south of I-90, with the highest amounts along and south of Highway
18. Temperatures Thursday through Saturday will be around 10
degrees cooler than normal for this time of year, in the upper 40s
and low 50s. Lows will be in the 20s. Winds will be periodically
breezy.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

The Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the low category
this afternoon. Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture
content of grasses, and other dry organic material on the
ground, indicate that the probability of a fast moving fire is
low. Outdoor burning under these conditions can usually be
with reasonable safety precautions, but should be monitored.

OUTLOOK FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON...The Grassland Fire Danger Index
will reach the low category.

The grassland fire danger product reflects fire danger for native
grasses. It is not intended for cured agricultural crops, nor
will it reflect conditions in road ditches which have been mowed.
