...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1912, it was necessary to cut through drifts higher than the
engine of the Rock Island trains in order for trains to move through
the area following a blizzard. A Union Pacific train was completely
covered in a draw 2 and a half miles east of Colby. Drifts of three
feet or more covered most of the city. When the snow melted over the
frozen ground a flood resulted. Unfortunately, little soaked in to
the soil and the dirt began to blow soon after.
