SUMMER 2014 WAS A VERY WET ONE IN PORTLAND WITH A NOTICEABLE ABSENCE
OF ANY TRULY HOT SUMMER TEMPERATURES. IT WASN`T UNTIL THE LAST PART
OF JULY THAT PORTLAND FINALLY SAW TEMPERATURES RISE ABOVE 85
DEGREES. MUCH OF THE LAST HALF OF THE SUMMER WAS SPENT BELOW NORMAL
UNTIL WARMER WEATHER ARRIVED BY THE END OF AUGUST. THERE WERE
SEVERAL PERIODS OF SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL INCLUDING AROUND JULY 4 WHEN
HURRICANE ARTHUR PASSED BY OFFSHORE. ANOTHER SIGNIFICANT EVENT WAS
THE FLASH FLOODING THAT OCCURRED IN THE CITY ON THE EVENING OF
AUGUST 13 WHEN MORE THAN 6 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN A FEW HOURS.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR SUMMER 2014 WAS 66.9 DEGREES. THIS IS
RIGHT AT THE NORMAL TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER SEASON BUT THE
COOLEST SUMMER SINCE 2009. THE WARMEST SUMMER EVER WAS 1988 WHEN THE
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 68.7 DEGREES. THE COOLEST SUMMER WAS ONLY
63.7 DEGREES AND OCCURRED ON THREE YEARS: 1964, 1962, AND 1954.

THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE OF THE SUMMER AND THE YEAR SO FAR WAS 88
DEGREES ON AUGUST 27. IF PORTLAND DOES NOT REACH 90 DEGREES THIS
YEAR IT WILL BE THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2008 THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED.
NORMALLY PORTLAND SEES 4.6 DAYS PER YEAR AT 90 OR ABOVE INCLUDING
3.9 DAYS DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS. ONLY 6 TIMES HAS PORTLAND FAILED
TO REACH 90 DEGREES IN A YEAR. THIS IS ROUGHLY 8 PERCENT OF ALL
YEARS IN THE PREVIOUS 73 YEARS OF TEMPERATURE RECORDS AT PORTLAND.
BELOW IS A LIST OF THE COOLEST YEARLY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES AT
PORTLAND.

COOLEST YEARLY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES

18.98 INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN SUMMER 2014. THIS WAS 8.44 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL AND RANKS AS THE 4TH WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD. THREE OF THE
FOUR WETTEST SUMMERS IN PORTLAND`S 144-YEAR HISTORY OF PRECIPITATION
RECORDS HAVE OCCURRED SINCE 2009. THE HEAVIEST RAIN EVENT OF THE
SUMMER OCCURRED ON THE EVENING OF AUGUST 13 WHEN 6.43 INCHES OF RAIN
FELL IN JUST A FEW HOURS AND CAUSED SIGNIFICANT FLASH FLOODING IN
THE CITY. MORE THAN ONE THIRD OF THE ENTIRE SUMMER RAINFALL WAS
MEASURED IN THAT ONE EVENING. THE WETTEST SUMMER EVER RECORDED IN
PORTLAND WAS 2009 WHEN 22.31 INCHES OF RAIN FELL. THE DRIEST SUMMER
WAS 1999 WHEN ONLY 4.10 INCHES WAS MEASURED.

SINCE 2014 RANKS AS THE 4TH WETTEST ON RECORD IN PORTLAND, THIS
MEANS THAT 3 OF THE TOP 4 WETTEST YEARS ON RECORD HAVE OCCURRED
SINCE 2009. IN FACT, 6 OF THE LAST 8 YEARS (SINCE 2006) HAVE RANKED
IN THE TOP 20 WETTEST SUMMERS ON RECORD AT PORTLAND. EVERY SUMMER
SINCE 2004 HAS SEEN MORE THAN 10 INCHES OF RAIN, A PERIOD OF 11
YEARS WITH NEARLY NONSTOP ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL. BELOW IS A LIST OF
THE TOP TEN WETTEST SUMMERS IN PORTLAND`S 144-YEAR HISTORY OF
