...Potential for Heavy Rainfall Tonight...

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread from south to
north across the region late this afternoon through tonight. Deep
layer moisture will be on the increase through the afternoon and
into the evening hours as strong southerly to southwesterly winds
draw moisture northward. Latest indicators suggest the potential
for widespread rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 2.0 inches of rainfall
with locally higher amounts around the stronger thunderstorms.

Since area rivers and streams have not had much time to recover
from previous flooding and are still running relatively high,
renewed rises are expected and there will be the potential for
flooding on area rivers and streams. Also, given that soil
moisture levels remain high from recent rains and with reduced
capacity to handle runoff into rivers and streams that are
already high, there will be the potential for flooding, especially
in low-lying flood prone areas. Residents living in low-lying
flood prone areas and locations along rivers and streams should
pay close attention to later forecast information. Since the bulk
of the rainfall will be overnight, motorists should be especially
cautious as flooding is harder to recognize at night.

In addition, additional heavy rainfall is expected over the
weekend. Models indicate that some areas could receive several
additional inches of rain this weekend, especially Saturday night
into Sunday. This will compound any ongoing flooding across the
region.
