FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
210 PM PDT TUE SEP 2 2014

...DRY AND UNSTABLE WITH HIGH HAINES AIR THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...RELATIVELY DRY COOL FRONT OFF WASHINGTON
COAST WILL PASS ACROSS THE REGION THIS EVENING. THEN DRY AND WARMER
WITH ELEVATED HAINES AIR AS THERMAL LOW PRESSURE BUILDS UP THE COAST
WED NIGHT AND REMAINS THERE THROUGH FRI. THE THERMAL LOW PRESSURE
WILL SHIFT EAST OF THE CASCADES LATER SAT...WITH INCREASING ONSHORE
FLOW AFTERWARDS.

.DISCUSSION...RELATIVELY DRY COOL FRONT NOW SITS OFF THE WASHINGTON
COAST...AND WILL PUSH ACROSS THE REGION THIS EVENING. FRONT SHOULD
BE STRONG ENOUGH TO PRODUCE SOME SPOTTY RAIN ACROSS THE N ZONES BUT
MAIN EFFECT WILL BE THE INCREASED ONSHORE FLOW. EXPECT BREEZY WEST
WINDS OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND THROUGH THE COLUMBIA GORGE THIS
EVENING...WITH WINDS EASING LATER TONIGHT.

THEN CHANGES WILL ARRIVE. STRONG THERMAL LOW PRESSURE WILL BUILD
ALONG THE OREGON COAST LATER WED AND THU...AND UP THE WASHINGTON
COAST LATE THU AND FRI. THIS WILL BRING VERY DRY AIR ACROSS WESTERN
WASHINGTON AND OREGON. THIS IS NOT THE CLASSIC EAST WIND PATTERN SO
WINDS WILL NOT BE ALL THAT STRONG. HOWEVER...AIR MASS WILL BE VERY
DRY...WITH AFTERNOON HUMIDITY OF 10 TO 20 PERCENT OVER MUCH OF THE
MIDSLOPES AND RIDGES...AND POOR TO FAIR RH OVERNIGHT RECOVERIES IN
THOSE SAME AREAS. WORST CONDITIONS LOOK TO BE S OF A NEWPORT TO
MOUNT HOOD LINE. ALSO...EXPECT ELEVATED HAINES INDEX OF 5 TO 6 OVER
MUCH OF THE DISTRICT FOR LATE THU THROUGH SAT. ALL IN ALL...EXPECT
VERY ACTIVE FIRE BEHAVIOR ON ANY EXISTING OR NEW FIRES THU TO SAT.

THERMAL TROUGH WILL SHIFT ACROSS THE DISTRICT FROM THE COAST RANGE
TO THE CASCADES ON SATURDAY. WINDS WILL EASE...BUT AIR MASS REMAINS
VERY WARM AND DRY. THIS IS WORST TIMING...AS THERMAL TROUGH WILL
ACT AS A FOCUS FOR LOCALIZED ENHANCED INSTABILITY OVER THE CASCADES.
ANY FIRES UNDER THIS ENVIRONMENT COULD SEE EXTREME BEHAVIOR. ONCE
THE THERMAL SHIFTS EAST...WILL HAVE INCREASING ONSHORE FLOW.

AT MOMENT NO FIRE WEATHER WATCH...BUT LIKELY THIS ON WED PROVIDED
CURRENT TRENDS CONTINUE IN THE TONIGHTS COMPUTER RUNS.

FCSTR...ROCKEY.
