...RIP CURRENT RISK IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A RIP
CURRENT RISK...WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING.

* TIMING...ROUGH SURF AND NUMEROUS STRONG RIP CURRENT ARE EXPECTED
THE ENTIRE DAY. THE GREATEST THREAT FOR RIP CURRENTS WILL BE FROM
10:30 AM THROUGH ABOUT 430 PM.

* IMPACTS...STRONG ONSHORE WINDS WILL PRODUCE LARGE BREAKING WAVES
OF ABOUT 5 TO 6 FEET IN THE SURF ZONE TODAY. NUMEROUS STRONG
RIP CURRENTS WILL ALSO OCCUR. MINOR BEACH EROSION IS POSSIBLE
AROUND THE TIMES OF HIGH TIDE AT AROUND 730 AM THIS MORNING AND
AGAIN AT ABOUT 730 PM THIS EVENING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

THERE IS A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS.

RIP CURRENTS ARE POWERFUL CHANNELS OF WATER FLOWING QUICKLY AWAY
FROM SHORE...WHICH OCCUR MOST OFTEN AT LOW SPOTS OR BREAKS IN THE
SANDBAR AND IN THE VICINITY OF STRUCTURES SUCH AS JETTIES AND
PIERS. HEED THE ADVICE OF LIFEGUARDS AND THE BEACH PATROL. PAY
ATTENTION TO FLAGS AND POSTED SIGNS.

IF YOU BECOME CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...DO NOT PANIC. REMAIN CALM
AND BEGIN TO SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE. ONCE YOU ARE AWAY FROM THE
FORCE OF THE RIP CURRENT...BEGIN TO SWIM BACK TO THE BEACH. DO
NOT ATTEMPT TO SWIM DIRECTLY AGAINST A RIP CURRENT. EVEN A STRONG
SWIMMER CAN BECOME EXHAUSTED QUICKLY.

WITH THE SURF BEING ROUGH TODAY...LARGE BREAKING WAVES COULD KNOCK
YOU OFF YOUR FEET AND MAKE YOU MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BECOMING CAUGHT
IN A RIP CURRENT. ENTERING THE SURF ABOVE YOUR KNEES WILL BE
DANGEROUS TODAY.
