THE METEOROLOGICAL WINTER SEASON OF 2014-15 BEGAN MILD WITH THE
LEAST SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD AND ENDED VERY COLD WITH THE
SECOND SNOWIEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD. IN BETWEEN...JANUARY WAS NEAR
NORMAL. THIS LARGE VARIATION FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END LED TO
RATHER BENIGN SEASONAL RANKINGS...DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT FELT LIKE
A LONG AND COLD WINTER TO MANY PEOPLE.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE SEASON WAS 23.3 DEGREES...4.1
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 14TH COLDEST WINTER SEASON.
THE RATHER MILD DECEMBER OFFSET THE VERY COLD FEBRUARY TO NORMALIZE
THE SEASONAL TEMPERATURE.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE PERIOD WAS 5.49 INCHES...1.58 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 35TH DRIEST WINTER SEASON. SNOWFALL WAS
32.3 INCHES...6.0 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 16TH
SNOWIEST WINTER SEASON. BELOW IS A MONTH BY MONTH SUMMARY OF HOW THE
WINTER SEASON TRANSPIRED.

AFTER A VERY COLD AND RELATIVELY SNOWY NOVEMBER...DECEMBER WAS A
DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT MONTH WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND
SNOWFALL THAT WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL.

DECEMBER BEGAN WITH SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND ENDED
WITH TEMPERATURES MUCH BELOW NORMAL. HOWEVER...MOST DAYS IN BETWEEN
WERE WARMER THAN NORMAL. THE WEATHER WAS VERY TRANQUIL AND
RELATIVELY MILD...ESPECIALLY COMPARED TO THE VERY COLD AND SNOWY
NOVEMBER. ONLY A HANDFUL OF WEATHER SYSTEMS BROUGHT PRECIPITATION TO
THE FORT WAYNE AREA. WITH COLD AIR LACKING AND WARM MOISTURE FROM
THE PACIFIC AND GULF OF MEXICO STREAMING INTO THE
AREA...PRECIPITATION FELL MAINLY AS RAIN.

WITH THE LACK OF COLD AIR AND PRECIPITATION PRODUCING WEATHER
SYSTEMS...IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THE MONTH ENDED AS ONE OF THE LEAST
SNOWIEST DECEMBERS ON RECORD IN FORT WAYNE. WHAT IS A SURPRISE IS THAT
THIS FOLLOWED A NOVEMBER THAT HAD MORE SNOW AND WAS THE 25TH
SNOWIEST NOVEMBER WITH 4.2 INCHES. IRONICALLY...FORT WAYNE RECEIVED
MORE SNOWFALL IN DECEMBER THAN SOUTH BEND INDIANA...WHICH IS KNOWN
FOR ITS LAKE EFFECT SNOWFALL. THIS HAS ONLY OCCURRED 12 TIMES SINCE
1912.

THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 32.6 DEGREES WHICH WAS 3.5
DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 29TH WARMEST DECEMBER
DATING BACK TO 1912. THERE WERE JUST 6 DAYS WITH A HIGH TEMPERATURE
OF 32 DEGREES OR COLDER. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS 56 ON THE 23RD
AND THE COLDEST WAS 10 ON THE 31ST.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 1.72 INCHES...1.05 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 32ND DRIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD SINCE 1912.
MEASURABLE SNOW FELL ON JUST FOUR DAYS WITH THE GREATEST BEING 0.2
INCHES ON BOTH THE 27TH AND 30TH. THIS RANKED AS THE 5TH LEAST
SNOWIEST DECEMBER ON RECORD SINCE 1912.

IT WAS A RELATIVELY QUIET JANUARY WITH PERIODS OF COLD AND SNOWY
WEATHER BUT NO STRONG STORM SYSTEMS LIKE 2014. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY
TEMPERATURE WAS 21.6 DEGREES...3.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED
AS THE 31ST COLDEST JANUARY ON RECORD. THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE WAS
42 ON THE 17TH AND THE COLDEST WAS NEGATIVE 8 ON THE 8TH. THERE WERE
SIX DAYS WITH A LOW TEMPERATURE OF ZERO OR COLDER.

PRECIPITATION WAS 2.23 INCHES...0.03 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED
AS THE 47TH WETTEST JANUARY ON RECORD. SNOWFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS
12.7 INCHES...2.6 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 21ST
SNOWIEST JANUARY ON RECORD.

FEBRUARY BEGAN WITH A POWERFUL WINTER STORM THAT DROPPED RECORD
SNOWFALL ACROSS THE REGION. THIS SET THE STAGE FOR A VERY COLD AND
SNOWY MONTH WITH SEVERAL RECORDS BEING BROKEN FOR BOTH SNOW AND
COLD. THE SECOND HALF OF FEBRUARY WAS THE COLDEST ON RECORD.
FITTINGLY...THE MONTH ENDED AS IT STARTED WITH SNOW DURING THE FINAL
HOURS.

A RECORD SNOWFALL OF 9.0 INCHES OCCURRED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE
MONTH...BREAKING THE OLD RECORD FOR THIS DATE BY MORE THAN 4 INCHES.
THIS WAS ALSO THE SECOND HIGHEST SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL FOR ANY DAY IN
FEBRUARY AND TIED AS THE 7TH HIGHEST SINGLE DAY SNOWFALL FOR ANY
MONTH AT FORT WAYNE.

THE STRETCH OF FEBRUARY 12TH TO THE 28TH WAS ALSO...BY FAR...THE
COLDEST EVER RECORDED. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE DURING THIS PERIOD
WAS JUST 11.3 DEGREES. THE PREVIOUS COLDEST AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FROM
THE 12TH TO 28TH WAS 14.5 DEGREES SET IN 1978.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH OF FEBRUARY WAS 15.7
DEGREES...12.6 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 3RD COLDEST
FEBRUARY ON RECORD. THE COLDEST WAS 1978 WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
OF 11.8 DEGREES. IN COMPARISON...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN FEBRUARY
2014 WAS 17.6 DEGREES AND THAT RANKED AS THE 6TH COLDEST FEBRUARY.
THE WARMEST TEMPERATURE THIS MONTH WAS 45 DEGREES ON THE 8TH AND THE
COLDEST TEMPERATURE WAS 6 BELOW ZERO ON THE 23RD AND 24TH. THE 45
DEGREE HIGH WAS THE 10TH COLDEST HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR A FEBRUARY
WHILE THE 6 BELOW WAS TIED AS THE 26TH COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER
RECORDED IN FEBRUARY.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH WAS 1.54 INCHES...0.50 INCHES BELOW
NORMAL. THIS RANKED AS THE 49TH DRIEST FEBRUARY. DESPITE HAVING
BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION...THE VERY COLD AIR ALLOWED NEARLY ALL OF
THE PRECIPITATION TO FALL AS SNOW WITH A HIGH RATIO OF SNOW TO
LIQUID. TOTAL SNOWFALL WAS 19.0 INCHES...11.3 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.
THIS RANKED AS THE 2ND SNOWIEST FEBRUARY...JUST 0.2 INCHES SHORT OF
THE RECORD SET JUST LAST YEAR WITH 19.2 INCHES.

EVERY DAY THIS MONTH HAD A LOW TEMPERATURE BELOW FREEZING AND 23
DAYS HAD A HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 32 DEGREES OR COLDER. MEASURABLE
PRECIPITATION FELL ON 11 DAYS AND ONE DAY...THE FIRST...HAD 0.82
INCHES OF PRECIPITATION. THIS WAS MORE THAN HALF OF THE MONTHLY
TOTAL.
