Fire Weather Planning Forecast for Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
942 AM PST Thu Nov 23 2017

...Hot and dry this week with elevated fire danger...

...Strong north to northwest winds Sunday night into Monday followed
by strong Santa Ana winds Tuesday/Wednesday...

.DISCUSSION...The ridge of high pressure aloft will weaken through
this weekend. Despite some cooling today will still continue hot and
dry conditions with a repeat of record heat in many areas. Weak
offshore flow today will increase late tonight into Friday with wind
gusts between 30 and 40 mph in wind prone mountain areas of the Santa
Barbara mountains especially above Montecito and through mountains
near the I-5 cooridor. Increased downsloping flow will offset some of
the humidity increases with pockets of teens. The locally gusty winds
and dry conditions will continue through Friday afternoon bringing
elevated fire weather conditions to the aforementioned areas.

The cooling trend will continue over weekend but highs will still be
3-5 degrees above normal on Sunday. Weak offshore winds Saturday will
turn weak to moderate onshore by Sunday evening.

A weak cold front will likely drop some light rain across SLO County
Sunday but no precipitation is expected further south. Behind the
front Sunday night gusty north to northwest winds are expected,
especially in southern Santa Barbara county and the I5 corridor
region where gusts between 40 and 60 mph are possible. Humidities are
expected to drop to between 20 and 30 percent in and around the
Santa Ynez Range during the peak of the event with a few hours of
near critical conditions possible. By Monday night and Tuesday the
winds will shift to northeast as a strong Santa Ana develops with
gusts to 60 mph possible in the favored areas of Los Angeles and
Ventura Counties. Humidities are expected to drop into the teens and
single digits again, however temperatures will only be in the 70s to
lower 80s. If current computer projections hold a fire weather watch
will likely be needed for late Monday night through Wednesday.
