FIRE WEATHER PLANNING FORECAST FOR NW OREGON AND SW WASHINGTON
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE PORTLAND OR
300 PM PDT WED JUL 29 2015

...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM PDT FRIDAY FOR
OREGON FIRE WEATHER ZONES 603...604...605...606...607...
608...AND WASHINGTON FIRE WEATHER ZONES 604 AND 660...

.BROADCAST DISCUSSION...HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS IN PLACE
THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK. A THERMAL TROUGH WILL DRIFT
OVER THE CASCADES AND WILLAMETTE VALLEY EACH OF THE
NEXT FEW DAYS...THEN MOVE BACK ALONG THE COAST OVERNIGHT.
THIS WILL BRING ENHANCED INSTABILITY AND MIXING. WITH MID
LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS AND DRY FUELS IN PLACE...CRITICAL
FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED. THE THERMAL TROUGH
WILL MOVE EAST OF THE CASCADES THIS WEEKEND. ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND
EVENING STARTING FRIDAY AND CONTINUING INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...A VERY STRONG RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE IS
STRENGTHENING OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST TODAY...BRINGING
SIGNIFICANTLY WARMER AND DRIER WEATHER TO THE REGION. EXPECT
LITTLE CHANGE IN THE OVERALL PATTERN THROUGH FRIDAY. IN
ADDITION TO THE HOT DAYTIME TEMPERATURES...EXPECT POOR
OVERNIGHT HUMIDITY RECOVERIES NEAR AND ABOVE A THERMAL BELT
THAT HAS FORMED BETWEEN 2500 AND 4000 FT DUE TO STRONG
SUBSIDENCE. A THERMAL TROUGH HAS SET UP OVER SOUTHERN OREGON
AND IS EXTENDING INTO THE OREGON CASCADES THIS AFTERNOON.
EXPECT THE THERMAL TROUGH TO REMAIN OVER THE REGION THROUGH
AT LEAST FRIDAY...DRIFTING BACK TOWARD THE COAST DURING
THE OVERNIGHT HOURS AND MOVING INLAND DURING THE DAY AS THE
INTERIOR HEATS UP. THIS WILL BRING ENHANCED MIXING AND
INSTABILITY WITH MID LEVEL HAINES 6 CONDITIONS TO MUCH OF
THE REGION. FUELS ARE ALSO VERY DRY...SO EXPECT
CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TO BE IN PLACE THROUGH
THE END OF THE WEEK. BASED ON THE LOCATION OF THE THERMAL
TROUGH THIS AFTERNOON...DECIDED TO EXTEND THE RED FLAG
WARNING TO INCLUDE THE CENTRAL OREGON COAST RANGE...
ALL OF THE INTERIOR LOWLANDS...AND THE SOUTH WASHINGTON
CASCADES.

THE FORECAST MODELS ARE INDICATING THAT THE THERMAL TROUGH
WILL FINALLY PUSH EAST OF THE CASCADES ON SATURDAY...
ALTHOUGH THE TIMING IS STILL SOMEWHAT IN QUESTION. THE
UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IS ALSO EXPECTED TO BEGIN GRADUALLY
WEAKENING AND MOVING EAST OVER THE WEEKEND. EXPECT TEMPS
TO COOL A COUPLE OF DEGREES EACH DAY...BUT IT WILL STILL
BE QUITE WARM. AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH PUSHING IN FROM
THE NORTH WILL CONTINUE THE GRADUAL COOLING TREND THROUGH
THE FIRST HALF OF NEXT WEEK. AS THE RIDGE AXIS SHIFTS
EAST...THE FORECAST MODELS ARE BRINGING INCREASING MID
LEVEL MOISTURE IN FROM THE SOUTH STARTING FRIDAY. THIS
WILL BRING A THREAT FOR ISOLATED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS TO THE CENTRAL OREGON CASCADES EACH
AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM FRIDAY THROUGH THE FIRST
HALF OF NEXT WEEK...WITH THE BEST THREAT LATE IN THE
WEEKEND OR EARLY NEXT WEEK. PYLE
