...DAM REMOVAL ALONG THE SHELL ROCK RIVER AT ROCKFORD IOWA...

THE SHELL ROCK RIVER FLOWS THROUGH THE CITY OF ROCKFORD...IOWA.
FOR MANY YEARS...A LOW HEAD MILL DAM HAS BEEN LOCATED HERE. THIS
DAM WILL BE REMOVED WITH WORK BEGINNING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 20TH.

THERE HAVE BEEN PROBLEMS WITH THE DAM OVER THE YEARS AS IT HAS
AGED...AND IN LATE SUMMER OF 2010 IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE DAM
WAS IN A STATE OF FAILURE. AT THAT TIME...A SEARCH BEGAN TO OBTAIN
FUNDING FOR REMOVAL DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS AND ALSO FOR THE
IMPROVEMENT OF RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES.

** WORK WILL BEGIN ON THE DAM DURING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 20TH...
WITH DAM REMOVAL ACTIVITIES DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY. **

WATER LEVELS ABOVE THE DAM WILL BE LOWERED BY ABOUT A FOOT PER DAY
STARTING THE WEEK OF JANUARY 27TH. AS WATER LEVELS GO DOWN...ICE
CONDITIONS MAY BECOME UNSAFE IN SOME AREAS UPSTREAM OF THE DAM.
BELOW THE DAM...WATER LEVELS MAY GO UP SLIGHTLY FOR A TIME AS THE
WATER IS RELEASED. THIS MAY CAUSE ICE CONCERNS DOWNSTREAM AS WELL.

THOSE WITH RECREATIONAL INTERESTS ALONG THE SHELL ROCK RIVER
IN THE ROCKFORD AREA ARE URGED TO USE CAUTION.

PLEASE OBEY ALL SIGNAGE AND SAFETY BARRICADES AND...AND STAY OUT
OF CONSTRUCTION AREAS.
