...A RATHER COOL AND SLIGHTLY WET SUMMER AT FORT WAYNE...

THE METEOROLOGICAL SUMMER MONTHS OF JUNE...JULY AND AUGUST WERE
RATHER COOL COMPARED TO NORMAL. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE WAS
ACTUALLY A LITTLE ABOVE NORMAL AT 70.5 DEGREES...0.8 DEGREES ABOVE
NORMAL. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR AUGUST WAS 69.7 DEGREES...1.4
DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. IT WAS JULY THAT BROUGHT THE SEASONAL AVERAGE
DOWN CONSIDERABLY AS IT WAS THE COLDEST JULY IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA
SINCE RECORDS BEGAN IN 1897. IT WAS ALSO A SLIGHTLY WET SUMMER AT
FORT WAYNE...ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A STRETCH OF DRY WEATHER IN LATE JULY
AND THE FIRST HALF OF AUGUST THAT HAD PEOPLE HOPING FOR RAIN. THAT
RAIN CAME AND CAME FURIOUSLY IN A WEEK LONG STRETCH FROM AUGUST 16TH
THROUGH THE 22ND. DURING THIS PERIOD...NEARLY 90 PERCENT OF THE
TOTAL RAINFALL FOR AUGUST OCCURRED. 3.80 INCHES OF RAIN FELL DURING
THIS PERIOD...WITH A SINGLE DAILY RECORD RAINFALL OF 3.24 INCHES
FALLING ON AUGUST 17TH.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR THE THREE MONTH SUMMER SEASON WAS 69.7
DEGREES...2.1 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS TIES AS THE 12TH COOLEST
SUMMER ON RECORD IN THE FORT WAYNE AREA. THE AVERAGE HIGH
TEMPERATURE FOR THE SUMMER WAS 79.7...2.9 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. THIS
TIES AS THE 10TH COOLEST AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR SUMMER. THE
AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE WAS 59.6 DEGREES...1.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.
THIS RANKS AS THE 14TH COOLEST AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE FOR
SUMMER.

THERE WERE REALLY JUST TWO STRETCHES OF WARM WEATHER THIS SUMMER...
ONE TOWARD THE END OF JUNE AND THE SECOND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
AUGUST. DURING THE 13 DAY PERIOD FROM JUNE 17TH THROUGH JUNE
29TH...THE HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS AT LEAST 80 DEGREES EACH DAY AND TWO
DAYS IN THIS PERIOD WERE IN THE 90S. THE WARMEST DAY OF THE SUMMER
OCCURRED ON JUNE 25TH WHEN THE HIGH WAS 95. THE 10 DAY PERIOD OF
AUGUST 8TH THROUGH THE 17TH WAS THE SECOND LONGEST STRETCH OF DAYS
WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES OF 80 DEGREES OR WARMER. THIS PERIOD ALSO HAD
2 DAYS WITH HIGHS OF 90 OR WARMER...91 ON AUGUST 9TH AND 92 ON
THE 16TH. THERE WERE ONLY 4 DAYS THIS SUMMER WITH HIGHS AT OR ABOVE
90 DEGREES. A NORMAL YEAR HAS ABOUT 15 DAYS WITH HIGHS AT OR ABOVE
90 DEGREES. MORE THAN TWO THIRDS OF THE SUMMER DAYS HAD AN AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE AT OR BELOW NORMAL. OF THE 92 SUMMER DAYS...63 WERE AT
AT OR BELOW NORMAL. THERE WERE ONLY 3 DAYS WHERE THE LOW TEMPERATURE
WAS 70 DEGREES OR WARMER WITH THE WARMEST LOW TEMPERATURE BEING 73
ON JUNE 25TH.

PRECIPITATION FOR THE SUMMER WAS 12.21 INCHES...0.99 INCHES ABOVE
NORMAL. THIS RANKS AS THE 30TH WETTEST SUMMER ON RECORD. THE ALL
TIME WETTEST SUMMER OCCURRED IN 1986 WHEN 18.70 INCHES OF RAIN
FELL.
